Make it count. The new firearms control law gives everyone the chance to turn in unwanted or illegal guns and register restricted weapons without fear of prosecution for possession offences during the amnesty. The amnesty means you can also dispose of any prohibited weapons, explosives or ammunition. Too often, forgotten or neglected guns can lead to a tragedy. The amnesty is an ideal opportunity to get rid of weapons you no longer want. Taking advantage of the amnesty is easy. Simply unload the gun and turn it over to your local police. If there is the slightest risk or if you have any questions, call your local police. Make it happen for the safety of you and your family. .s.@ Department of Justice Ministére de la Justice Com m U n | ty b r. | e f S Compiled by Darren MacDonald Drug awareness week In conjunction with Drug Awareness Week, Kimberly- Clark Inc., along with other local businesses and communi- ty organizations, is bringing Eugene "Mercury" Morris to the communities of Terrace Bay and Schreiber as a guest speaker. Mercury Morris was a run- ning back for the Miami Dol- phins during their famous 1972 season when the team was undefeated. Both Morris and teammate Larry Czonka eamed spots in the NFL Hall of Fame record books by being the first running backs to achieve 1,000 yard seasons. His other achievements include the sec- ond longest kick retum in NFL history, and back-to-back championship seasons. In 1982, seven years after leaving professional football, Morris was arrested, tried and convicted on charges of con- spiracy and trafficking in cocaine. As a result, he served three and a half years in prison. On March 6, 1986, the Florida Supreme Court, by an overwhelming 5-1 decision, declared that Mercury Morris was not given a fair trial, since evidence that would have helped him prove his inno- cence was not permitted. He was released from prison a free man--free from the charges CANADA"S FIREARMS AMNESTY brought against him and, more importantly, free from the drug abuse which plagued him after his football career ended. Mercury Morris will be in the communities of Terrace Bay and Schreiber on Thurs- day, Nov. 19, to talk to the area's school children about how drugs affected his life. He will also be speaking to the general public at 8 pm, at Lake Superior High School, Terrace Bay Campus. Admission to this community-sponsored event is free.
