"The purpose of this special week is to inform students about the fast-changing labour market, to stimulate their interest in career choices and to encourage them to stay in school and obtain their high school diploma," says Cochrane-Superior MP Rég Bélair. "CCW is part of the nation- al stay in school initiative, which was established to com- bat Canada's current 30 per cent high school drop-out rate." Bélair says unemployment statistics show that a person's level of education can be directly related to their future ability to earn a living. Also, 25 per cent of unemployment insurance premiums are paid out to people under the age of 24. "The transition from school to work is one of the biggest challenges facing our young people today," he says. ""Tech- nological advances, the ever- changing labour market and increased competition in inter- national markets are three excellent reasons for young people to get more education and training. "It is crucial that young people receive this vital career information," says Bélair.
