A WARM WELCOME TO NEW CURLERS! *DOOR PRIZES. by Darren MacDonald Staff When Georgina Davis first started her volunteer work for the local branch of the Tuber- culosis Association 38 years ago, Schreiber was quite a dif- ferent place. She remembers that tuber- culosis was so common here in the 1950s, people used to build sun porches on their houses for the patients. "They would sleep out there," she says, "because that's what they needed--sun- light and rest." There was even a mini tuberculosis epidemic at the time, and the members of an entire family in Schreiber were stricken with the disease, says Davis. As part of their duties, the volunteers who were active in the association would travel to the sanitarium in Thunder Bay to visit convalescing tuberculo- sis patients from Schreiber. In the 1960s, the group became the Tuberculosis and Respitory Disease Association and in the 1970s, as times changed again, it settled on its current name, the Lung Asso- ciation. In the 1950s, Davis served as president of the local chap- ter of the Tuberculosis Associ- ation. She became president of the entire Thunder Bay branch of the Lung Association in the 1970s, a branch which takes in the area from Marathon to THE McCAUSLAND HOSPITAL The McCausland Hospital has the opportunity of acquiring the services of an audiologist on a 1/2 day per month basis. She also received a decorative crys- tal plate. "We've always had a really great response here in Schreiber," says Davis. "We first started out with about 20 volunteers, but we could have had a lot more." Today, the Lung Association has 33 Associates across Ontario, in addition to one association in each of the other nine provinces. "Today, volunteers like Georgina are getting pretty rare," says Kathryn Kaipo, Executive Director of the Lung Association's Thunder Bay District. "She comes from a society where volunteerism was more of the norm." Kaipo says that the average volunteer today stays an aver- age of two or three years, and then is "burned out." That fact makes Davis' achievement even more impressive, she says. Kaipo, along with local Regional Representative Cathy Withers, made the presentatior to Davis on Oct. 2.
