Page 5, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1992 Invest a little time in Ontario's future The future of any province lies with their young people who, when they see a need, are prepared to fill it. In Ontario and this commu- nity we are indeed fortunate to have an abundance of young people who fit this description. It is these young people who deserve, but seldom receive, proper recognition. For that rea- son the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards Program was founded in 1981. This program, a project of the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) with assistance this year provided by Bell Canada, has over the past 11 years paid tribute to 144 exemplary indi- viduals or groups between the ages of six and 18. Junior Citizens represent a broad cross-section of Ontario's fine youth. Some are honoured for their tremendous attitude in coping with illness or handicap. Some have identified a local need, and have taken a leader- ship role by devoting an amaz- ing amount of time and energy towards community service and betterment. _ Still others have been select- ed for responding instantly in a moment of crisis, or for the way in which they have shown kind- ness and compassion. Those chosen to receive the awards, along with their fami- lies, are guests of honour at a luncheon in Toronto during the annual convention of the OCNA. Award recipients are joined by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor for a family portrait at Queen's Park, and are pre- sented with $200 and a Junior Citizen pin. Many young people in our community are worthy of the attention and encouragement provided through the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards Program. Every nomi- nee will receive a certificate Stating that they were consid- ered for this distinct honour and contributed greatly to their community. Invest a little of your time in Ontario's future. Say 'thank you' to a special young person or group by filling out an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year nomination form--avail- able now from this OCNA member newspaper. pl Do you know a young person, aged 6 to 18 years, who is involved in worthwhile community service or a special person who is contributing, while coping with a physical or psychological limitation? Do you know a youth who has performed an act of heroism? The Ontario Community Newspapers Association with Bell Canada as the patron, are looking to recognize these "good kids", the young people of our province who show a commitment to better for others.
