Page 2, News, Tuesday, June 23, 1992 Community briefs Pet shop owner to keep snakes The owner of a pet shop in Schreiber is upset that the township tried to force him to get rid of his boa constrictors. "T think it's unfair for the township to tell a person what he can or cannot have in the confinement of his house," says Phil Desilets, owners of Phil's Pets Birds and Supplies. "Especially when they're not dangerous." The township sent Desilets a letter June 3 telling him that keeping the snakes in his shop was contravening the Animal Control by-law, which pro- hibits people from keeping rep- tiles in their homes. Desilets went to the June 16 meeting of Schreiber Council and argued that since he is FAREWELL LUNCHEON FOR ERNIE HUNT The Terrace Bay Community Church and Saint Andrews United Church - Schreiber, would like to invite all friends and acquaintances of Ernie Hunt to attend a service and/or luncheon held in his honour. Time: Service 9:45 Luncheon 11:15 Place: Terrace Bay Community Church Date: June 28, 1992 keeping the snakes in his pet store and not his home, he was not breaking the by-law. "T stress that this letter was a scare tactic and an attempt to trick me into getting rid of my snakes," Desilets told Council. Council admitted they had made a mistake in saying that Desilets couldn't "display" his snakes in his pet store. And in response to Desilets' concern that outlawing reptiles in Schreiber is hurting his busi- ness, Reeve Bob Krause invit- ed him to sit in with the com- mittee that's currently working on a new animal control by- law. "I'm sure we can work something out with you as a pet-shop owner and the con- cers of the town," said Krause. "And if it's a matter of striking the word reptile from Description of Land(s) Parcel 24 - 1 Section 55D - 111 Galena Street Township of Schreiber Lot 4 Plan 55D - 110 Parcel 4- 1 Thunder Bay Freehold Township of Schreiber Lot 7 Plan 55D - 110 Parcel 7 - 1 ; Thunder Bay Freehold Township of Schreiber Parcel 8048 Lot 12 Plan M-9 Township of Schreiber invited for the purchase of the land(s) de time on July 15, 1992 at Township of Schreiber. In an interview after the meeting, Desilets said that out- lawing reptiles means that keeping perfectly safe animals is illegal in Schreiber. "I'm hoping to have the word'reptile' taken out of the by-law," he says. "Because that takes in turtles, iguanas and other small animals too, not just snakes." Here come the caterpillars Now that the grass is ris, you're probably wondering where the caterpillars is. They are back, and there are more of them. In the area from Atikokan to Manitouwadge and up through Geraldton, we will see more of the same as last year. Spruce budworm, forest tent caterpil- lars and birch leaf miner will all be very active during the next few weeks. The Eastern spruce bud- - worm has increased substan- tially over the last year. In 1990, the area of moderate to severe defoliation was 4 mil- lion hectares. In 1991, this was up to 6 million hectares. These pests attack spruce and balsam fir, and, to a lesser extent, tamarack. The area affected will likely continue to expand, though the egg mass density within the area may have decreased slightly. Larvae development seems to be ahead of the foliage development due to the late spring. If this continues, dam- age to new growth will be more severe. The forest tent caterpillar infestation continues to enlarge. The area affected grew from 1.4 million hectares in 1990 to a 1991 total of 5.6 mil- lion hectares. Trends indicate that popula- tions should remain low south and west of Thunder Bay, and also low north and east of Nip- igon and Terrace Bay. Severe defoliation is expected north and west of Thunder Bay. =f IT 5 A BOY } Jim & Marie Baldi are pleased to announce the safe arrival of their son, Christopher Allen \ born June 9, 1992 weighing 8 tbs, 2 oz.
