Students, staff and parents had a barbecue, held a three-legged foot race, a watermelon seed spitting contest, a potato sack race, jello eating contest and (above) a donut eating contest. Mill rates rise nearly 5 per cent in Terrace Bay by Darren MacDonald The News The Township of Terrace Bay plans to spend a total of $6,364,302 in fiscal 1992, a figure which includes spending for local schools. Municipal mill rates are going up by 7.67 per cent, while secondary school mill rates are increasing by 2.60 per cent, and elementary school mill rates are up 2.96 per cent. Meeting June 15, Council passed a by-law empowering the township to set this year's mill rates, which overall have increased an average of 4.98 per cent over last year. The municipality estimates it will raise $1,942,481 through sources other than taxes. "Provincial grants make up a lot of that amount," says Clerk- Treasurer David Fulton. "And the rest is made up of fees that we charge individuals and organizations for things. Some of it is money we're taking out of reserve funds, licenses, and all kinds of odds and ends." Residential mill rates are set at 46.685 for general purposes, 29.931 for separate and public schools, and 24.953 for sec- ondary schools. Commercial mill rates have been set at 54.924, 35.213 and 29.357 respectively. Mill rates are the rates applied to a person's property assessmenj to come up with their tax bill. continued on page 8 legal hunting nets two men $3,000 in fines by Darren MacDonald The News A tip from the public gave the Ministry of Natural Resources in Terrace Bay the information it needed to con- vict two men of unlawfully hunting a moose calf. Kim Smith and Gerhard Trapp were fined a total of $3,000 each. They were both convicted of illegally hunting a moose, which netted them a $1,500 fine; of attempting to use tags issued to other hunters, which cost them another $750; and finally they were found guilty of obstruct- ing of a conservation officer, which cost them another $750.
