_ Page 12, News, Tuesday, March 31, 1992 Northern Insights continued from page 5 Alexander Tenyakshev, a telecommunications instructor from Moscow, joined Jones at a recent Thunder Bay news conference to explain, in badly broken English, how Russia is trying to find new ways to respect the environ- « ment as it strives to create new economic and political directions for the next centu- ry. Pointing frequently to his head, he told the news confer- ence, "it won't be easy because you know economic situation in Russia very bad. "My people would like to eat good food without (stand- ing in long) lines to buy everything. Now is a bad time to keep in head what I mean, but if we don't put inside head now, tomorrow will be much more complicated." Tenyakshev and other Rus- sians are discovering that the old state enterprise mega-pro- jects were just as bad--if not worse--for the environment as the capitalist styles of development. Tenyakshev says he hopes to see Baikal protected from further harm "by at least no more paper factories" being built, and because the "Adventure Club (which Tenyakshev heads) and Sputnik Company (a high- technology firm) are now building new very big hotel and centre of ecological clean tourism in region of Baikal. Maybe (that) will help." So if you live around Lake Superior and happen to be near a community sponsoring an event with the Baikal- Superior Connect project this summer, take some fime to talk to these foreign visitors. Craig Nicholson continued from page 3 contact the local snowmo- biling club about the problem and together with MNR work out an active campaign to discouragé sleds on the cross country ski trails (club newsletter, newspaper ads, better signage, cooperation of club trail warden). If that trail is MNR maintained, then they may be willing to lay trespassing charges against the offending snowmobilers. One or two well-publicized cases along with greater pub- lic awareness would help. Also, skiers could make note of the registration num- bers of offending machines wherever possible and make a report to the MNR or the OPP. Take a photo of offend- ing machines as evidence. Is there any kind of barrier that could be placed across the ski trail entrances to limit access? Are snowmobilers using that trail because it's so well groomed and theirs are not? Is the local snowmobile club doing a good enough grooming job on the snow- mobile trails to keep traffic where it belongs? The bottom line is that we all have to work together to eliminate abuses like this and cannot let complacency rule the day. Darren, I am happy to hear that the column has been well received and look forward to making further appearances on your pages. Sincerely, Craig Nicholson EASY TO LOOK AT. PAINLESS TO AFFORD.
