Roger Thomas has had an interesting life. Originally from Halifax, Thomas, who joined the Schreiber detachment last month, spent 19 years in the | military, including a six month | stint in Cyprus with the UN peacekeeping forces. "The toughest part of being over there was being away from my family," he says. But homesickness wasn't the only problem he had there. "The wife wanted to live in a small town," he says. "But we really like it here -- it's a real friendly place." He received his first taste of Northern winter last week when his car wouldn't start. "T called over to Spadoni's," he said, "and they told me it just wasn't winterized yet." Terrace Bay does well in competition Terrace Bay was well rep- resented at this year's edition of the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment's 3 Platoon "Best Shot" rifle competition held in Marathon two week ago. Pte. Don Clark placed in the top five, while Pte. Belanger and | Pte. Bigings, both local high school students, shot well dur- ing the three day exercise, but lost out to Sergeant R. Simp- son, the overall winner. The Marathon sergeant beat out other competitors from Ter- race bay, Manitouwadge, Thunder Bay and Geraldton for this year's top honours. Members of the 3 Platoon fired collectively more than two thousand rounds, using both the C-7 rifle (a semi- automatic weapon) and the C- 9 machine gun over the three day exercise in Marathon. Second Lt. Brian Walmark, 3 Platoon Commander, was impressed with the level of competition. "Many of these people have never seen either of these weapons before we trained them, yet they're shooting them as if they've had them all their lives," he said.
