The 16 homemakers serving our area provide an average of 1,000 hours of service per month. Red Cross Homemakers are unique: they help people of all ages in all kinds of situations to remain in their own homes. Their activities include assisting with personal care, doing the shopping, or just having a chat over a cup of tea. It's not an easy job. Red Cross Homemakers receive Home Support Level II and III imes, "'just a chat" training to develop skills to handle demanding situations. They are also required to have a standard First Aid Certificate, and a CPR Certifi- cate. Many homemakers also pro- vide palliative care: there is nothing harder than watching a young mother who is dying at home, with all her children around her. ; The Red Cross flag was raised at City Hall in Thunder Bay on Monday, Oct.21, to rec- ognize the valuable contribu- tion of our homemakers to the city and our area. Everyday in Terrace Bay and Schreiber, a homemaker is making life a little easier for someone who needs help to stay at home. They give a precious gift -- independence.
