"In that situation, people should call us -- that's what we're here for," he said. "Not only is it dangerous, but it's cruel to wound the bear. And a wounded bear is a lot more aggravated and dangerous than one that's not." In addition to the bangers, the police have two bear traps they can borrow from the Min- not always available," he says. A bear trap would cost about $2,500. Paul Dennis, Conservation Officer at the Ministry of Nat- ural Resources, said his min- istry has a number of ways of dealing with blackbears, including a tranquilizer gun. "A lot of people think you can point a dart in a bear's bum and put it to sleep. But that's just not how it works,' Dennis said. "It's part of the Walt Disney syndrome." In fact, Dennis said the pro- cess of tranquilizing a bear is plagued with pitfalls. Too much tranquilizer can kill the bear, and not enough will just make it angry. If the dart is shot too hart, it can kill the bear, or seriously wound it, leading to a painful and slow death for the animal. istry, but are currently trying to purchase one of their own, said Fenton. "You've got a scared, hurt bear who isn't going off to sleep for at least four minutes," he said. "And its near town. And the bear can run faster than us." A trapped bear is unpre- dictable, and, Dennis said, often it's just too dangerous and difficult to try and put the bear to sleep. Another bear has been sight- ed around Terrace Bay, and residents are asked to keep their garbage indoors for the next couple of weeks until the bears go into hibernation. "If people would take a little more care in storing their garbage, it would help us a lot," said Fenton. The carcass was taken to the Ministry of Natural Resources, and an office spokesperson said Thursday that someone had applied for the right to claim the meat. No bear sightings have been reported in the Schreiber area, the Schreiber O.P.P. said Thursday. On a much less dangerous note, Chief Fenton also said there have been many more skunks coming out of the woods of late, also foraging for food. 0; Do you know a young person, aged 6 to 18 years, who is involved in worthwhile community service or a special person who is contributing, while coping with a physical or psychological limitation?
