"We expect everything will be fully operational by early November," John Wilcox, media relations officer at Min- nova Mines. The original starting date for the new loading process was last month. But technical "wrinkles", and difficulties in constructing a building essen- tial to the process, have pushed back the start date. What is this? Snow already? Yes, that's what it is. We were hit with a minor snowstorm Oct. 5, not two weeks after the official end of summer. Time to dig out the winter boots and long johns. The new process will allow loading of copper and zinc concentrate into railcars inside a special building. Schreiber residents have complained that the current loading process, conducted outdoors, allows ore dust to blow into town. The new process will not only occur entirely indoors, it will also put the ore into sealed containers. The process is expected to prevent ore dust from blowing into Schreiber. One of the reasons the project is behind schedule, Wilcox said, is because Minnova wants to be sure the design and construction for the $500,00 project is done properly. Also, wet weather has made it difficult to lay the foun- dation for the building. "When you're laying founda- tion (for a building), you want to make sure everything's pumped out and dry," said Wilcox. "And, as you may remevber, we've had some pretty wet weather. But we're hoping the foundation will be laid by this weekend," Wilcox said in an interview Oct. 3. The pre-engineered building is expected to arrive from Win- nipeg late next week, and Wilcox said the scale that will be used to: weigh the ore will be moved inside after the building arrives. Trimac Transportation Ser- vices designed the new ore container system, and manager Bill McLarty said a test of the system in September revealed a continued on page 11 Gorge will be accessible to disabled by Darren MacDonald The News _Terrace Bay Town Council has decided to make the $340,00 Gorge development accessible to the disabled. In a special public meeting held.on Monday, Sept. 30, Council accepted the Tourism Committee's recommendation to go ahead with a compromise proposal by Moore/George Associates. That option was a compro- mise between the competing concerns of making the devel- opment accessible to the dis- abled, and having enough money to attract tourists and build other facilities. The suceessful proposal will see one disabled accessible observation deck built, and money left over to build wash- room facilities and roadsigns to attract tourists. The Tourism Committee had been presented with three options. One of the options would have cost $100,000 more than what was available, but did provide for disabled accessibility. The second kept within Council's monetary guidelines, but did not provide for a wheelchair ramp . A third option became nec- essary after council could not agree which of the two original proposals to follow. Shirley Mikus, of the Dis- ability Action Group, greeted the news with satisfaction. "We are very pleased with Council's decision," she said. -- \__ DIANNE O'NEILL A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD. * Home * Business * Auto * Cottages * Recreational Vehicles * Etc.
