Kathy (Hannah) is frightened of everything, including living outside the sanatorium. One member has not spoken in years, and another only says Hello. They do such a good job that Crazy People Rating: O pOot........scssscsssssssesseseeseenerseenenes Starring: Dudly Moore, Darryl Hannah, Paul Reiser This is a light-hearted movie on the truth in advertising and the unlikelihood of it ever hap- pening. Emery (Moore) is a disillusioned ad man. He hates all the lying and truth bending they do. (He also just broke up with his girlfriend, who took everything.) He decides that it's time for a change, so he makes truth ads. His supervisor, Stephen (Reiser) thinks Emery has gone off the deep end and takes him to a sanatorium. Now fate steps in. While Stephen is away from his office, a copy boy takes the truth ads down to printing. The ads appear in hundred of magazines, on billboards, on T.V. Stephen and Emery are fired, until an overwhelmingly posi- tive response comes from the people. Now the two are called geniuses. Poor Emery. Just when he was starting to relax, they want him back. He says no, but the boss says if he doesn't, they won't pay for the sanatorium. Emery's support group decides help him write the ads, so that he can stay. And what 10 excellent "the company sets up offices for them, gives them things and fills their heads with self- importance. Emery, in the meantime, is trying to' get them to balance their new success with the reality of day to day life. When the company decides they don't need Emery anymore, they get him kicked out of the place. The boss take credit, on T.V., for the new advertising gimmick and then forces the patients to keep working, under the threat of sending them to separate sanatoriums. The patients don't know what to do. They are lost without Emery. Can they succeed? Do they stand up for what is rightfully theirs? You can guess or you can rent the movie. This is a comy little movie that is both funny and sad. It manages, in a very unpretentious 'way, to show clearly one problem of the world. It is not the people in the advertising business who are crazy. It is the consumer. We let them dictate to us what we should wear, drink, or drive. The consumers must stand up for them- selves and protest when they see an ad they feel is demeaning or untruthful. They must let their thoughts and opinions be heard. If they don't, then one day truth will be just a joke. I give Crazy People a 7. xs by Alice Scott 'Pet Talk Howto be a Local Hero Ask. When you want to : make your community a better» 4 place, but don't know where to} As mentioned in previous articles, you should never buy a pet from a pet store. Purchase your dog or cat from an established breeder or from your local Humane Society. All breeds of dogs have congenital defects. With mixed breeds start, ask your friends. Chances are, many of them are already Local Heroes, giving their time and money to causes that youcanhelp ¢% too. Bea you have no way of knowing what problems will pop up. With purebreds you can ask the breeder if the pet has congenital defects | in its line. Most breeders are honest and will tell you of any prob- lems associated with the breed. For instance, the German Shep- herd, Collie, Beagle, Miniature Poodle, Labrador Retriever and Keeshond can inherit epilepsy. Congenital eye abnormalities including cataracts (blindness caused by retinal atrophy or malde- velopment, glaucoma and small eyes) are found in many of the common breeds. There are also bone related problems in many canines. Hip dysplasia is the most common canine congenital defect. Make sure that the pedigree lines involved with your prospective pet have been cleared of Hip dysplasia. Even if they are clear for five generations problems can develop but you have a lower risk factor if the parents are X-rayed. Think before you purchase any pet! | Local Hero.
