Page 13, News, Wednesday, August 21, 1991 Another step toward saving the fragile environment Cork Foster, president of Berry Hill, a mail order farm supply business in St. Thomas, Ont., has discovered a wonder- ful alternative to those foam nuggets used for packing mate- rial. Even before environmentally sensitive farmers started to return boxes of the nuggets, Foster had been experimenting with popcorn. He learned that popcorn is not only biodegradable but it is one-quarter as expensive as foam. He now produces his own packing material using seven ordinary hot-air corn poppers. Foster only problem was dealing with the numerous calls from curious joumalists and businessmen from all over the world. He was unable to get any work done. One of the curious was the U.S. Air Force, a user of large amounts of foam packing, and an organization anxious to 'green' up their image. Popcorn prices, Foster pre- dicts, will soar in this. year as industry embraces this cheap and environmentally correct packing material. To guarantee a supply of popping corn, a hybrid grown almost exclusively in the U.S. Midwest , Foster has ordered a 22 ten load. It needs to be a cohesive act by the world community. Only through the determination and cooperation of all nations can we be guar- anteed the quick success tht we need.
