Conman tries to scam George Carlin "R" Rating: 0 PpOOt..........ssseesessscssnsssenenseeensenens This is a comedy special lacking one thing - the comedy. Don't get me wrong - there are shades of comedy here, just not what you'd expect from Mr. Carlin. It lacks the originality and spontaneity that people have come to associate with him. I also found there was excessive swearing (including big ones). There are however, a few bright moments to sift for. He does a spot called "Tips to keep peo- ple on their toes" where you can find such help- ful hints as "Go into a gift shop and ask for your gift" or "go-into a gun shop, buy a gun and some ammo and then ask if they sell ski masks". These moments are far and few between and Carlin fills in the gaps with such things as tacky jokes about baby on board signs that incite vio- lence. Carlin seems to have gone the way of all of today's comedians who believe if you surround a joke with enough swears, people will instinctiv- ly think it is funny. Give me the good old days of that Carlin classic "There was a freak acci- dent on the highway today... 3 freaks in a van hit . beautiful, but innocent woman, falls in love with her; now does- 10 excellent n't want to be a conman any- more, but still wants to stay in life he has made up to fool her. Too predictable. Spaced Invaders: Aliens intercept a radio broadcast of the famous War Of the Worlds by Orsen Wells that caused public panic when it was originally played. They think that Earth has been invaded by Martians and they come down to help their space buddies. Not only are they alone in their task, they've landed during Hal- loween, so no one takes them seriously. Dr. Alien: Two space beings disguise them- selves as humans to conduct virility experiments on an unsuspecting high school boy. The movies only drawing point seems to be Audrey Landers" body and semi-naked school girls. The Toxic Avenger Part II: A man is mutat- ed by toxic chemicals and has super human | strength now. In part one he cleaned up his town and brought the bad guys to justice. Now there are some new bad guys trying to move in. This movie is so ridiculously bad it ranks up there with that 50's B-move "Killer Tomatoes From Outer Space" only this one is much more graphically violent. The course is called Excel, and it is designed specifically for people working in a small public library. It is a general- ized course that enhances skills necessary to assist the public in all areas of the library. Fenton has been working on the courses since the fall of 1987. She said the structure of program is "correspondence with a difference." The assign- ments were written and a tutor would phone to answer ques- tions or have discussions. To receive the Excel Certifi- cate, Fenton was required to complete 10 courses. There was some choice in the topics so that her study could be indi- vidualized to suit her needs and interests. Some of the courses she studied include information services, children's guidance, circulation and marketing. "I was one of the first to go through the program," she said. She added that courses have changed over the years and that the program can now be com- pleted in a shorter period of time. Excel is funded by the Min- istry of Citizenship and Culture and is offered through the Ontario Library Service. from former clientele to call today | jalllet et a plein temps r partir | | dca rendez-vourde 1:00 p.m. % F:00 p.m. Et elle tnuile tous | aca cltents a tiliphenerpour un rendez-vous des aujourd hut.
