A great weekend at the Rossport Fish Derby Continued from page 1 one liquor charge was laid on the lake, there wer no boating violations and every one stopped held a fishing license. The lake was patrolled over the weekend by two boats, each with an MNR Conservation Officer and an OPP officer. A highlight of the weekend was the stop-over, on Sunday afternoon, of the three canoes of Voyageurs en route to Win- nipeg. The Voyageurs, an expedi- tion of students from Lakehead University and the University of Ottawa retracing the routes of Canadian explorer Sir Alexander MacKenzie, were led from the harbour to the derby grounds by their piper. Here they presented an his- torical drama that gave the audience some insight into the Derby winner Bill Lucas holding his trophy. Lucas won with a Lake Trout weighing 16.1 Ib. life of MacKenzie and the Voyageurs who were instru- mental in opening up Canada. Other activities over the weekend included the Fish Derby Dance on Friday night, a children's matinee on Saturday with music by Rodney Brown and on Saturday night an Arm Wrestling Championship. Fisheries Unit keeps track of fish stocks by Rob Cotton The News The Lake Superior Fisheries Unit (LSFU) has become a familiar sight at the Rossport Derby and other major fish der- bies on the Northshore. Working in the sun all day behind the weigh station on the Rossport derby grounds, fish- eries technicians sampled the weekend's catch. "Fish derbies are good spots to see a lot of fish in a short amount of time," said Pat Fur- long, a fisheries technician with the LSFU working at the Rossport Derby. The information gathered provides data on the status of fish stocks and is used to deter- 26 < Pe VA + oo ' es 26 s! > << ee SG. ipyvvvVY vv Vv s.> NA > 4 mine long term trends in the fish population. Fishermen bring their catch to the unit after the weigh-in . The technicians first ask the anglers to indicate, with as .much precision as possible, were they caught the fish. The length of the fish is then measured and a sample of the scales are taken. "We also keep track of lam- prey scars," Furlong said. This helps to determine whether or not the lamprey are getting worse. The fish are checked for fin clips, which all stocked fish have, to determine whether the fish is native or stocked.
