Canoeist faces Superior alone Continued from page 2 "I would see phantom cliffs and it was only with great - effort that I made myself continue to steer by the compass." Donaldson is making the journey for two reasons. First, to commemorate "a great Canadian hero" who, after an arduous journey reached the Pacific coast on July 22, 1793 and second, as research for a book he is writing on Mackenzie. He admires Mackenzie and the other explorers who pushed through the Canadian wilderness. "Mackenzie's determination, leadership and perseverance are great values to replicate," he said. Mackenzie is of particular interest to Donaldson because the explorer comes from the same district in northern Scotland, Seaforth, as Donaldson himself. By following the same path as Mackenzie Donaldson said ' he is sharing some of the same experiences. These experiences, he said, would allow him to bring a greater understanding to the book. Originally the book was to be an historical work on Mackenzie but Donaldson's experiences on the first leg of his journey last summer, from Lachine, Quebec, up the Ottawa River, across to Georgian Bay and ending in Sault ~ Ste. Marie, caused him to change his mind. He has now decided to write something a little more personal including some politics, some of his own philosophy and the role of what the Scot's pene means to Canada. The lone canoeist hopes to reach the Lake of the Woods area by the end of the summer. The third leg of his journey should take him to Athabaska by next summer. He wants to arrive at the Pacific Ocean at Bella Coola in British Columbia on July 22, 1993 to mark the 200th anniversary of Mackenzie's arrival at that spot. Sea to sea expedition Continued from page 2 in finding the route to the west as Mackeniie travelled the river that he had named Disappointment (today known as the Mackenzie River) to the Arctic Ocean. Realizing that his knowledge of cartography and navigation was inadequate to reach his goals, Mackenzie travelled to England to study these subjects. Returning to Canada, his improved education enabled him to discover the elusive overland route to the west. The Canada Sea-to Sea expedition, having travelled Mackenzie's first route in 1989, and presently travelling from Quebec to Manitoba, will paddle from Winnipeg to Peace River, Alberta in 1992. In 1993 the expedition will travel from Peace River to Bella Coola, British Columbia on the Pacific Ocean. _ During the four years of the expedition the group will have paddled more than 12,000 km. from. sea-to-sea.
