Flame of Hop Schreiber and Terrace Bay by Rob Cotton The News Law enforcement officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Terrace Bay Police Services an the Schreiber Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police ran in this year's Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics. These runners joined with 120 other police and law enforcement agencies and 4,000 runners from across Ontario in this year's 6,000 kilometre run. The Torch Run hopes to see a total exceeding $500,000. This was the fifth annual run in Ontario which takes place at the direction of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. The run originated in Wichita, Kansas by Police Chief Richard LaMunyon in 1981 and today is the largest fund raising project for SPecial Olympics in the world. The run through Terrace Bay and Schreiber was part of the Northwest relay from Kenora to Marathon, one of eight separate relays which criss-crossed Ontario. On July 25 the final leg of the run will see representatives from all law enforcement agencies run through Ottawa to the opening ceremonies of the Ontario Special Olympics Summer Games. Special Olympics is an ongoing program of fitness, recreation and sport for people who are mentally handicapped. Today over 5,000 Ontario citizens who are mentally handicapped are participating in hundreds of programs across the province.
