Program Grade 6 students in both Terrace Bay Public School and St. Martin School/Ecole St. Martin have recently graduated from the Values, Influences and Peers (VIP) program. The VIP program's purpose is to establish positive attitudes in young people about themselves and the society they live in. It is a province wide program that is run locally by the schools in conjunction with police forces. P.C Krentz of the Terrace Bay Police Services, who helps instruct the course in both schools, said the program helps the children deal with situations they might run into the future. *understand that each person may be influenced by peer pressure * become aware of the importance of self- respect and self-confidence in meeting the challenge of peer influence influences for the rule of law This year students also went on a field trip to the criminal court in Marathon where they saw what takes place in a court of law. "The use of discussion is one of the main methods used in the program," he said. The discussion is based on a described situation, he explain- ed, and the children are then asked what the result should be. "We then discuss how they can achieve that result." "If the children.do run into a situation the program has given them some experience with it and some ways of dealing with it," Krentz said. The VIP program provides opportunities for students to: * become aware of some of the basic values of Canadian society, specifically the set of values considered essential to the well being of the individual and the well being of society. *> learn: to ="Saccepe responsibility for their own actions In memory of our dear Mother and Grandmother, Jeannine Desrosiers, who passed away June 21, 1990.
