Science North set up several displays last Tuesday that encouraged student involvement such as panning for gold and working with lasers. Tourist Information Centre is open for visitors by Rob Cotton The News Several visitors to Terrace Bay and the North Shore were welcomed at the new Tourist Information Centre on its opening day, Monday, May 27. "We were quite pleased to welcome our first visitors," said Susan Johnson, Terrace Bay's new Tourism Co-ordinator. She said the official opening is expected to _ take place on Canada Day, July 1. Visitors to the centre will find a wide assortment of brochures, maps and other material that provide information about the immediate area as well as surrounding communities, the Province of Ontario and Canada. Barb D'Amuro is presently working as a Travel Councillor, greeting people in the reception area, answering their questions and generally making them feel welcome. Two student travel councillors will be working at the centre by the end of June. The interior of the building is light and spacious, a feeling enhanced by the extensive use of birch for the trim and reception counter top. Birch was chosen to reflect the predominance of birch trees in Terrace Bay. A sculpture of a Woodland Caribou, representing the herd on the Slate Islands, has been commissioned for display in the building. 'Anyone interested in placing a brochure in the centre should contact Johnson. "We really encourage people to come forward," she said, "and we do have information on how to produce a brochure." The commercial mill rate for 1991 will be 51.013 and the residential mill rate 43.361. Terrace Bay Township Council passed the increase Monday, May 27. Public elementary school taxes will increase by 4.35 per cent, separate elementary school taxes by 5.67 per cent and secondary school taxes by 3.65 per-cent. All school taxes are set by the school boards. The average tax bill for a public school supporter would be $1,068.42, an increase of $58.01 or 5.74 per cent. This is based on an average residential assessment of $11,043. The average tax bill for the separate school supporter would be $1,059.91, an increase of $61.61 or 6.17 per cent. This is based on an average residential assessment of $10,955, The Township's capital budget for 1991 includes the cost of purchasing a crawler tractor at a gross cost of $163,000. A grant of $97,995 towards the purchase of the tractor brings the net cost to $65,330. The province no longer allows the Township to burn garbage at the dump. It must be compacted and buried making the purchase of the tractor necessary, said Dave Fulton, township administrator.
