Page 11, News, Tuesday, June 4, 1991 Lake Superior Board of Education planning to close Caroline McMorland School in September The Lake Superior Board of Education plans to close the Caroline McMorland School at the end of June, 1991 and integrate the students into the regular school system beginning in September. The Caroline McMorland School was established in Marathon in 1967 by the Marathon Association for the Mentally Retarded. In the beginning, classes were held in St. John's United Church Hall and volunteers from the M.A.M.R. acted as teachers. In 1968, the Ontario Ministry of Education accepted responsibility for the education of retarded pupils and the schools came under the jurisdiction of the local public school boards. The Lake Superior Board of Education took over the Caroline McMorland School and a qualified teacher was hired for seven students. In 1971, the Board hired a full-time teaching assistant, Mrs. Elgie Stoddard, who has been at the school ever since. Mrs. Stoddard also acted as a volunteer teacher in the early days of the school. The school became known ,. officially as the Caroline "* McMorland School in 1972 at. the untimely death of Mrs. Caroline McMorland who had: been the driving force behind the establishment of the school. In 1973, the school moved @. to newly renovated facilities at Marathon High School. The 4 wr 26.9.5 school. Students from Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Manitouwadge stayed in boarding homes in Marathon during the week and returned home on weekends. The Board provided the weekly transportation and subsidized the cost of room and board. In August 1980, the Caroline McMorland School moved again, this time to Marathon Public School. It was felt that the opportunities for integration were better at the elementary school level. This particular move had been recommended in a Special Education Review of the Lake Superior Board and had been the feeling of the staff for some time. In 1981, there were nine students enrolled in the school. The staff consisted of one teacher and one full-time teaching assistant. Due to the great age range and the exceptional needs of the Students, there were nine individual education programs running at any given time. Integration of the Caroline McMorland students into physical education, art and rooms had been redesigned % with the school in mind and. they included a kitchen, living and classroom areas, as_ well as three washrooms. Students at the school came from the five communities of Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Heron Bay and Manitouwadge, which are all under the jurisdiction of the Lake Superior Board of Education. In addition, students used common facilities for weekly swimming and bowling programs. The Caroline McMorland School pupils participated at the local, regional and provincial levels in Ontario Special Olympic competitions. They also hosted an invitational swim meet and an Ontario Special Olympics Regional Bowling Tournament. By September 1990, there were four students enrolled in the school with one full-time teaching assistant plus one full- time intervenor assigned to one specific student. The teacher of the Caroline McMorland School was also responsible for the integrated special needs students within Marathon Public School.
