Page 3, News, Tuesday, May 21, 1991 The King twins of Terrace Bay by Rob Cotton The News The double baby stroller in the double garage of 16 East Grove Crescent in Terrace Bay tells the visitor that this is the home of the King twins. This is confirmed by one bassinet sitting beside one cradle in the living, the two new portable baby seats on couch and two cribs in the upstairs bedroom. The twins, Sarah Michelle King and George Joseph King are the first children born to Mike and Georgina King on April 4, at Port Arthur General Hospital in Thunder Bay. "We couldn't be happier with a boy and a girl, said Mike, "We're glad it is two because now we have a family." Georgina agreed with her husband but quietly added that she was glad it wasn't any more than two. The Kings now have to think twice about everything they do. "It is quite an adjustment after ten years of marriage," Georgina said, " We now have to think through planning our days a bit more." ; The King babies are special in a way other than being twins. They were conceived through a relatively new process called ZIFT, an anagram for Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer. The fertilized eggs are placed right in the fallopian tubes - two per tube. Mike said he and his wife were in the second group to take part in the new ZIFT program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "They told us that they were having a lot of success with this program," he said, " The program claims 90 per cent success for pregnancy - though not necessarily to carry to full term." The Kings made four visits to the clinic in Minnesota. The first was three days for testing, followed by a one day visit. They went through the actual process during an 11 day visit and by August, 1990 Georgina was pregnant. One final visit was made for Georgina to have a final check-up. "They were very good to us. there," Mike said, " and they phoned us quite often afterwards to see how we were getting along." The twins, born five weeks premature, spend a lot of their time eating and sleeping as they gain weight. Georgina King holds George Joseph and Mike King holds Sarah Michelle. Sarah, described by her mother as the one with a strong personality, weighed 5 lb 2 oz and George, the quiet one, weighed 4 Ib 6 oz. Georgina came home a week before the twins were moved to McCausland Hospital. She said it was difficult not to bring them home with her but she called Thunder Bay every day, collect, to find out how they were doing.
