Major overhaul for Unit #2 at Aguasabon Generating Station by Rob Cotton The News After 43 years of service the generators at the Aguasabon Generating Station have received a major overhaul. Ontario Hydro is currently rewinding the stator of Unit #2 at the station. The stator in Unit #1 was refurbished in 1990. The stator is the heart of the unit and has been generating 20,000 kilowatts of power into the grid in Northwestern Ontario since 1948. The stator is comprised of a circle of coils that generate voltage and-current when magnetic flux is driven through them, explained Rick Morden, district trade supervisor - electrical, for Ontario Hydro. The magnetic flux is provided by the field poles of the rotor, he said. The rotor, spinning inside the stator, cuts through the circle of coils with lines of force, magnetic flux, generating voltage and current, he continued. Morden said the electricity is then taken off through protection breakers, stepped up to 115,000 volts and transmitted. The coils fail because of mechanical action created by fluctuating magnetic fields, he said. Insulation gets worn, damaged and drys out. "The object of this exercise is to replace old coils-.with new properly insulated ones," he said. Ontario Hydro mechanical staff dismantled the massive Unit #2 in early January.
