Page 12, News, Tuesday, February 26, 1991 srolyn's I'm not really sure if I can say that I enjoyed this one.. As a movie unto itself, it is very, well-made. Strong characters you can believe in, well-defined locations and scene settings and fine performances by all the actors. It is the theme of the movie that bothers me. Set in the neat future, it is a time of chaos. The world has become so polluted with toxic waste, that sterility is rampant and only 1 in 100 women can conceive. The future of mankind is threatened when even those few stop having babies because they believe there really is no future. A militant religious group takes over and enslaves all the women capable of having babies. These women become handmaids to the wives of powerful officials. Their job is to make babies that the wives take for their own. The main story is centered around Kate (Natasha Richardson) and her perilous journey through this labyrinth of lies, corruption, dominance and lust, on ward to a distant freedom. There are some glaring errors in the movie. Everyone is trying to cross the border, but all through the movie are references to the fact that the only thing on the outside are the colonies. (Toxic dumps that are home to the banished, where Thinking Day for Guide-Scout Week you're lucky if parts of your body don't fall off in the first year).
