Children take the lead in sharing by Rob Cotton "The News Children helping other children have a Merry Christmas - that has been the result of this year's Share the Wealth campaign. "A great effort has been made by all the communities," said Doris Walton, a campaign co-ordi- nator, "They have really supported us this year." However, she added, without the children becoming involved it would not be the success that it is: Carrol Cringle, another cam- paign co-ordinator said the chil- dren went home and talked to their parents and encouraged them to become involved in everything that was going on. "Tt was the children in the com- munities that got the adults mov- ing," she explained. The children not only brought donations to their schools, they also brought donations to the the- atre, to skating night at the arenas and to the fire departments' pick- . ups. "They've gone all out and deserve a special thanks." Together, the children and adults in the area collected enough food and toys to provide the 42 families, over 60 children, with Christmas toys and Christmas dinner. New toys donated A lot of new toys were donated by businesses this year, Cringle said. "IT checked the age group we had toys for and which age group we didn't have toys for and a local business supplied toys that would fit the need," she said. One family, the Dakins, pooled their money and purchased toys for the children. "I don't know how many they collected we have green garbage bags full of brand new items, gift wrapped and marked, girl, 4 months old, etc.," Walton explained. "The whole idea behind this is to give the children of those fami- lies a Merry Christmas," Cringle said. Cringle said the list of donors, whether it was food, toys, money, time, space, or transportation is long and includes local business- es, adult service clubs, the Councils of both townships and the Fire Departments of both townships. Fresh food The Shate the Wealth cam- paign needed something more than donations of food and toys. They also needed cash donations in order to buy turkeys and fresh foods. This need was filled by the cash donations of many people and organizations. Among them: Grade One and Grade Four class- es at Terrace Bay Public School - $110.50; The United Paper-work- ers International Union Local 665 - $500; the Terrace Bay - Schreiber Lion's Club - $500 and Minnova Inc. - $200. The Towne Theatre in Terrace Bay gave a special showing of the movie Prancer charging a dona- tion of canned goods as admis- sion. "It was a packed house - a great success, " said Walton. The arenas in Schreiber and Terrace Bay also collected canned goods as admission to one of their public skating nights.
