Page 11; News? Tuesday, November 27, 1990 Christmas and pet safety by Alice Scott Christmas is only a month away, SO now is the time to start thinking about your pet's safety. Cats can be very bothersome during the holidays. But, if you take a few precautions, your cat will stay out of trouble. When decorating the Christmas tree, keep all the tinsel at the top half. Cats love to eat tinsel, but it is very dangerous since it can cause blockage in the stomach or intestines. This con- dition requires surgery or, if not noticed, will cause death. Cats also like to chew wires on the tree. Remove the plug at night to a place the cat cannot reach. This is also a safe practice for you and your family. Every year Christmas trees that have lights Winnie's Scribbles St. Andrew's United Church Women held their Annual Turkey Pattie Tea & Bazaar on Saturday in the Legion banquet hall. Ruth Hiller was the general convenor and was assisted by many members who served at the tea tables. Lyla Walker convened the Bazaar table and Mrs. Florence Fischer convened over the Home baking table. Gwen Hadley sold tickets at the door and Myrtle Gordon, Marion Yates, Lil McBride and Alice Fairservice were in charge of the Raffles. Earline Johnson was in charge of the kitchen crew, and the out- going plates. Prize winners were as follows: Marjie Smith - the toys Avila Richardson - fruit cake nora Richardson - fruit cake Pat Cook - Afghan Jack Handel - the hand made rug made by Lloyd Walker The door prize was won by Marcella Cebrario. We are most grateful to all who donated, worked, and attend- ed to make it a successful event. Our deepest sympathy to the relations of "Helen Darcy". The service was held at the United Church with Rev. Sparks. Many friends attended and lunch was served by the Ladies. Helen will be missed by all. Mr. & Mrs. Pat Moher have returned from their honeymoon in Jamaica. Jackie Bourguignon from Thunder Bay is visiting her moth- er and relatives. left on overnight have caused serious home fires. Christmas presents for your cat or kitten are easy to find. The "Forget-Me-Not" store' in Rossport has an excellent selec- tion of toys and catnip for your favorite kitty. Our local grocery stores, hard- ware stores, and department stores also carry stockings for your cat. These stockings usually have a great selection to keep your cat busy at Christmas. Dogs should be protected at Christmas as well. Keep plants such as holly (very poisonous berries) and poinsettias out of is reach. Even better, buy silk arti- ficial plants. When wrapping their presents, use plain tissue paper, if they open them on their own. Christmas paper has dyes in it that can upset your pet's diges- tion. If you are buying a puppy or kitten, wait until after the holiday season is over to pick them up. The holiday season is busy and at times confusing. This is not a.good atmosphere for a new puppy or kitten. Put a picture of a new pet in a box and wrap it. This way, you'll let the kids know what their pre- sent is. Remember pets can feel reject- ed during the festive season if you don't give them the same amount of attention that you usu- ally do. : Next week, "Where to buy your puppy or kitten". ; Hal Linden in Thunder Bay The Thunder Bay Community Auditorium and Thunder Bay Guide proudly present the Hal Linden Christmas show Friday, December 21 with two perfor- mances, 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. With eight seasons under his belt as television's most popular precinct captain, "BARNEY MILLER", tony award winner HAL LINDEN does more than bust crooks and crack jokes.
