McCausland H Rte members committed to service By Rob Cotton The News A committment to providing quality health care for the the people using McCausland Hospital is the driving force for members of the hospital's Board _ of Governors. "It's a committment of ser- vice," said Gail Davey, vice pres- ident of the board. Individuals must be prepared to commit time to attend profes- sional development sessions and educational workshops to learn how a hospital works, as well attend board meetings. "It also requires a committ- ment to the excellent staff at McCausland Hospital and the ser- vice they are providing," she said. Davey, who was impressed by the hospital's facilities, the com- mittment of the staff and the level of care provided, when she first moved to this area nine years ago, found the hospital to be an interesting place. "Everyone has their own way of serving their community and I thought that being a member of the hospital Board of Governors was one way I could serve," she said. The board of McCausland Hospital has 14 members. These members are elected with the exception of those who are appointed by various interest groups such as the local munici- pal councils. It is responsible for managing the affairs of the hospital. "The main role of the board is to set policy and establish proce- dures that ensure the hospital is Chimo Club Bazaar Report by Winnie Campbell The annual "Chimo Club" bazaar was very successful Saturday, Nov. 3. The -bake table, loaded with home baking, was convened by Eirene Harness, Mavis Slater, and Margaret Handel. The sewing table loaded with crafts and knitting was looked after by Rena Ross, Eva Gordon and Margaret McKenna. The raffle table for the hand- made doily made by Celia Valentino was convened by her. The doily was won by Eirene Harness, afghan was looked after by Juanita Gellert. The afghan was made by Mrs. Chadwell of Terrace Bay. The winner was Joyce Jarosz. The raffle for the huge box of groceries was looked after by Beth Macadam, and was won by Alice Sparkes. Each department of the hospi- tal, including the board and the chief executive officer, sets year- ly aims and objectives which are reviewed under the hospital's Quality Assurance Program. "This is done on a very regular basis," Davey said, "sometimes more often than once a year." The hospital also provides pri- mary and secondary care _hospi- tal facilities to support the ser- vices of general practitioners in the communities at a level equal to or exceeding guidelines set by the Ministry of Health. The board grants privileges to doctors allowing them to admit and treat their own patients in the hospital, Davey said. In return for those privileges at McCausland hospital the doc- tor agrees to cover the Emergency Department on an on- call schedule, she said. "Physicians have a profession- al relationship with the hospital but are not employees of the hos- pital," she continued. Davey explained that while the hospital board has no legal responsibility to attract doctors to come to Terrace Bay or Schreiber it members realize that an ade- quate number of good physicians is necessary if the boards com- mittment to quality health care is to be realized. "We are, on an informal basis, recruiting all the time and I'm pleased to say the hospital itself is quite an attraction to physicians," she said. The Board of Governors of McCausland Hospital is responsi- ble to the McCausland Hospital Corporation and to the Ontario Ministry of Health. In 1971 the hospital was incor- porated as a public general hospi- tal under the Corporations Act of Ontario. It operates under the Public Hospitals Act of Ontario, Hospital By-laws and in accor- dance with the policies and pro- cedures of the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health pro- vides 85 -95 per cent of the hos- . pital's operating budget. An annual membership in the McCausland Hospital Corporation cost $5 dollars. A lifetime membership costs $100. The corporation holds an annual meeting every June. At this time board members are elected. Davey said the people inter- ested in becoming members of the hospital board must be a member of the corporation, in good standing, for at least 30 days before the annual meeting.
