Boxing champion defends his title by Monica Wenzlaff Dominic "Hollywood" Filane successfully defended his title as Canadian light flyweight champi- on at the 1991 National Senior Boxing Championships. "I was really confident," Dominic after the Nov. 1 to 4 tournament in Hull, Quebec. Dominic defeated Barry Christie, a long-time rival, with a unanimous 5-0 decision after 3 rounds of boxing. Christie needed to beat Dominic twice to take the 'championship title. "He took the true form of a Canadian champion, that's for sure," _ said Gerry Filane said © Figliomeni of his brother Dominic. Gerry also fought in the tour- nament in the lightweight class, but was defeated in a quarter-final fight. ld A good experience" "It was a good experience," said Gerry. "I fought well, but I didn't fight as well as I know how." The brothers' personal coach, Adrian Theodoreseu, said Gerry did have a good tournament, but he still needs more experience.Gerry will fight next in London, Ont. from Dec. 6 to 9. The tournament winners will make up a second-place Canadian team that will also fight interna- tionally. Gerry is one of four in his weight class chosen to com- pete for a place on the team. Dominic, a:bronze medal win- ner at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, is in Bombay, India this week competing in the World Cup. "I'm very nervous," said Dominic even though he feels he is both physically and mentally prepared for the tournament. "These are the top guys in the world." Community official More permanent doctors by Robert Cotton Officials of communities served by McCausland Hospital have agreed on the need for four doctors to serve the area. The Hospital Board of Governors, Schreiber Township Council Township Council, met with Dr. - Claude Renaud, head of the Ministry of Health's under ser- - viced area program on Oct. 25, to discuss the situation. Mike Cosgrove, Schreiber Township reeve, said the meeting was very informative. "The bottom line is that we have identified that there should be four doctors for the area," he said. The Schreiber council is now considering renovating the exist- ing clinic to accommodate a sec- ond doctor, he said. Four doctors would reduce the on-call schedule at the hospital from one in three weekends to one in four. "There is less chance of burn- out with that schedule," Cosgrove said. Until the recent departure of Dr. Mark Woldnick from Terrace Bay there had been three perma- nent doctors for the area. "We hope that four doctors will make a good living here,"said Clem Fewer, chief executive officer of McCausland Hospital, "We know three will." The relationship between the community, the doctors and the hospital is very special one, he continued. "Some people think that because doctors have their clinics in McCausland Hospital that the hospital hires and fires them," Fewer said. Nobody hires doctors to work and Terrace Bay' needed in a community, he said. "However, it is responsibility of the councils, the hospital and every citizen to help attract doc- tors." When a doctor sets up a prac- tice in a community he applies for privileges to admit and treat patients at the hospital. The hospital after a thorough check of the doctors credentials, grants these privileges in return for the doctor's on call services in the emergency department. The doctor is also governed by the hospital's by-laws when prac- ticing medicine in the hospital. When practising in their own Clinics doctors are governed by their own professional standards. The doctors in Terrace Bay .rent the space for their clinics from the hospital. In the case of the Schreiber clinic the space is rented from the township. Dr. Renaud told those at the meeting the underserviced area .- program would provide locums (a replacement doctor brought in for short period of time), when avail- able, to maintain four doctors in the area, Fewer said. The communities are now looking for two more permanent doctors, two for Terrace Bay and . two for Schreiber. Presently there are two _per- manent doctors, one in Schreiber and one in Terrace Bay, and a locum, to provide services to the catchment area of McCausland Hospital, which is located in Terrace Bay. The hospital's catchment area contains a population 5,500 and includes the local service board of Rossport, the Pays Plat Indian Reserve the Townships of Schreiber-and Terrace Bay and the unorganized area of Jackfish. r \__ DIANNE O'NEILL A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD. * Home * Business * Auto * Cottages * Recreational Vehicles * Etc.
