With this popularity, parents are buying their children "turtles" for pets. Turtles are fairly easy to care for and interesting for your chil- dren to watch. However, contrary to common belief, the worst conditions a tur- tle can be kept under are those which exist in so-called turtle bowls. These bowls force turtles to exist in a totally unnatural envi- ronment and also can cause infec- tions or death. If you plan on having turtles for pets and want them to be healthy, invest in an adequate size aquarium. Your aquarium should have an island to allow the turtle to climb out of the water, to be closer to Buy your turtle a float light, which warms their shells. The aquarium should not be completely filled with water. The level should be at least 3" to 4" from the top. Always wash your hands after changing the water or pick- ing up your turtles to clean the tank Turtles can be infected by germs and infect you.
