HIGHWAY 17 SCHREIBER, ONT. 824-2568 AVIS Insights continued from page 5 committee's work bears real fruit, or just spends money on new brochures and advertising, remains to be seen. They have yet to lay out their strategy, so we don't know how (or whether) they intend to involve the public in their work. There are bright spots in this tourism picture. Thunder Bay is getting a new airport, if Ottawa can move its bureaucracy and budget machinery fast enough, according to the federal minister of Transport, Doug Lewis. It's supposed to be completed in time for another bright spot on our tourism horizon, the 1995 World Nordic Games. There's also a more realistic approach to the potential of tourism - with influential northerners like Rod Munford from Vermillion Bay, the past president of the Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association, pointing out in this column nearly One year ago that northern Ontario's economic planners should not depend on tourism as the saviour of our economy. Munford warned that its impractical to see tourism as anyone's economic saviour, "because it just doesn't have the money-generating power and the employment power to do that." If we want to take Munford's advice to heart, the context for tourism development is clear. We shouldn't view it as our economic salvation, only as one component -of our-diversification strategy. If : we solve the problems of high gas prices, poor roads, and the Canadian dollar along the way towards Forrest's new "unifying vision and image", the spin-offs will affect many other things than just the number of visitors we have, and how long they stay when they visit. Scribbles continued from page 10 and Mrs. A. Teske, presidentelect, who spoke on the power of the C.W.L. across Canada. President Carmel Zborowski gave a note of thanks to them both. Yola Cebrario and Alice McCouan, were given 50 year pins. Toots Jacques and Mary Figliomeni were given 25 year pins. Congratulations. A report was read by Sandra Larivee on the Share the Wealth Campaign. Carmel reported that the C.W.L. Memorial Service will be November 4, Mass. The WRAP campaign is orga- nized. Most town businesses will receive white ribbons in the mail to wear and display. Entertainment was under the direction of Jackie Commisso. Janet Moorey won the Mask con- test and a penny auction fol- lowed. Lunch was served and enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who helped. : Get well wishes to Mrs. Ann Todesco, Ida Gifford and Lil Christie. Our deepest sympathy to the Potvines the passing of Beatrice Potvine. She was a citizen of Schreiber years ago. PVSASISWSSSSESSSSIESS
