During the past year his schedule with the Canadian box- ing team usually kept him from training with brother Gerry. ' "It was hard last year because he was always travelling," said Gerry, who began boxing serious- ly last year and fought in local club fights while his brother was fighting internationally. "His winning the Canadian championship motivated me," he continued. "What he did in one year, I wanted to do in one year. I set the same goals as he did." With that tournament behind him, he is now hoping to win a place on the Canadian team. ."I'm a lot more confident now. I'm on a team with guys who are the best in the province," Gerry said. Dominic won the Ontario light flyweight title last year and had to defend it Oct. 13. He did so successfully, defeating a long time. rival, Barry Christie of Hamilton. He is now looking to the Nationals. The brothers train daily for the tournament, which will be held Nov. 14. They run each morning and spend at least two hours a day working with Adrian Theodorescu, an Ontario team coach' who is also their personal coach. "It's to our advantage because we're being taught the same thing by the same person. He tells one guy something and the other will pick up on it." Since Dominic and Gerry compete in different weight class- es they enjoy training together. They find by watching each other they see problems or mistakes being made and then avoid them. "We can tell each other the truth whether it hurts or not, because we're brothers." said Gerry. He is a lightweight boxer and competes at 132 pounds. "One day maybe Gerry won't be feeling up to par and I will be , so I'll push him," said Dominic who competes at 106 pounds, in the light flyweight class. "When I'm tired he'll say 'Come on, let's go." Theodorescu sees how much the brothers help each other. ""They motivate each other and they push each other," he said. Theodorescu believes that the full support the brothers receive from their family is important to their success. "I can say they're fortunate to have a great family." Cosimo and Diana Figliomeni, the boxers' parents, travel often from Schreiber to see them fight. "It's nice to have them there." said Gerry. Their parents have travelled all night to watch them compete, he added. Cosimo Figliomeni also helps coach the two brothers. "He 's always kept us on our toes," Dominic said of his father. "He makes sure we have no worries but boxing," adds Gerry. Truck Rentals! Gerry said that along with emotional support, their parents help with the financial costs of their boxing careers, allowing them to concentrate completely on the sport. Dominic has been to New Zealand, Indonesia and many North Américan cities in the past year with the Canadian boxing team. He feels his travels have "opened his eyes" and matured him. "I think it would be great for Gerry to experience that," he said. In the future both boxers will be working to make the 1992 Olympic team. "It would be great to see the world together." said Dominic. 'No storage space? Why not advertise your garage sale in our classifieds?
