Some of the major pro- jects included: installing additional switching equipment to meet growing demands. installing additional transmis- sion equipment. "This investment in Terrace Bay is part of Bell's total $2.4 bil- lion construction program for 1990," said Georgie Hari, Bell's local manager. She added that -- Bell is substantially increasing its investment to modernize the net- work. "This will help make us more efficient and contribute to keeping the rates down." As well, in 1989 Bell paid $59,269 in municipal taxes to Terrace Bay, including $1,632 in realty taxes, $490 in business taxes and $57,147 in Gross Receipts taxes. The Gross Receipts tax is set at 5 per cent of all telecommuni- cations revenue from Bell opera- tions in Ontario during the pre- ceding year. The amount allotted to each municipality is based on the number of Bell telephones installed. In 1989, this tax was $30.35 per telephone. In addition, Bell paid about $47,621 in 1989 in municipal taxes to Schreiber, including $6,733 in realty taxes, $2,567 in business taxes and $38,321 in Gross Receipts taxes. Schreiber Library news The fall hours are now in effect at the Schreiber Public Library, the library being open Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The fall sessions of Story Hour will commence in October. The 3-5 year olds will meet in the library from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursdays, and the 6-10 year olds will hold their sessions Saturday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00. These sessions will start October 11 and 13 respectively. The Library was very busy during Literacy Day. There were approximately sixty students and their teachers from the Schreiber Public School reading in the library for one hour. Many of the children came back on Saturday afternoon to add to their time read. We will be celebrating National Family Week October 1- 7 with a draw for two sweatshirts (one child, one adult). Come in and enter your name. The win- ners will be announced October G Saturday, October 13, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. there will be a book sale, white ele- phant table and fish pond for the children to kick off Ontario Public Library Week. Coffee, juice and donuts will be served. The theme for Ontario Public Library Week, October 15-21, is literacy and the slogan is BORN TO READ. The Schreiber Public Library will be holding contests during the week. On October 17 the library will co-sponsor the performance of JUGGLEKNOTS as organized by the Ontario Library Service-North and funded by the Outreach Ontario Programme of the Ministry of Culture and Communications. The perfor- mance will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium of Holy Angel's School. The entertainment is" suitable for elementary school children and family audiences.
