This Week in Fire By Patti Westerman Prevention Technician MNR It's been a quiet fire season in the Terrace Bay District, with a total of nine fires to date, all which have been declared out. Approximately 7.1 hectares were destroyed. The majority of these fires were man-caused; four rail- way, one industrial, two miscella- neous, one industrial, and two were lightning caused. Terrace Bay District crews responded to most of them with the exception of several small railway fires near the Terrace Bay /Nipigon District boundaries, which were initially attacked by fire crews from McDiarmid. Some air support was required on fire Ter-08. A CL215 water- bomber from Geraldton respond- ed in 25 minutes to the 1.5 ha fire which was situated just west of Manitouwadge, north of Sand Lake. The CL215 dropped one load. (5,455 litres) of water from Manitouwadge Lake onto the fire. Crews from Manitouwadge Fire Centre quickly followed up on the ground with portable power- pumps and hose. Other parts of the Region have been relatively quiet, with the exception of Geraldton District which has approximately 40 fires burning, ranging from 0.1 ha to 17,990 ha and consuming 56,130 ha of our forests. Several of these fires were threatening the north- ern communities of Summer Beaver and Webequie which resulted in an evacuation to Geraldton on July 27 and July 28. Numerous MNR fire crews and staff responded quickly to the situation by establishing sprinkler systems, and other suppression methods to protect the communi- ties and other values. Within two weeks residents of Summer Beaver arrived home and resi- dents of Webequie returned home August 12. As of August 13, 41 fires were burning in the North Central Region. Most are caused by lightning. People are urged to be extremely careful while burning, and with campfires, and always be careful with matches and cigarettes.
