This Week in Fire By Norm Gladish : Fire Prevention Technician Ontario forests are faced with impending environmental changes that will make forest fire prevention ever more crucial. The greenhouse effect is expected to produce hotter and longer fire seasons. What is this greenhouse effect and how does it effect wildfire? For an actual greenhouse, plas- tic or glass allows sunlight to pass through but tends to hold heat in. In this way, a warmer mini-envi- ronment.is created, so useful to extending the growing season in temperate climates - higher tem- peratures for longer periods. You experience this effect when get- ting into a hot vehicle on a sunny day. The whole planet is now being subjected to the same process. Air pollution from industrialized countries (notably carbon diox- ide), is suspended in the atmo- sphere, world wide. It acts much the same as the glass in a green house. But higher. temperatures for longer periods on a global scale have wide spread ramifica- tions, many as yet undetected or not fully understood by scientists. Some unexpected results are; drier and more vulnerable forests, an increase in tree diseases, a massive northward shift of forest species zones and problems for northern forest industries. Forecast average temperature hikes ranging from two to nine degrees centigrade, in the next three to six decadés will mean certain fire problems for Ontario's forests. Lakes, swamps and streams are critical components in fire fighting "Ontario -- style". Evaporation caused by warmer weather could reduce crucial water levels, The resulting drier forests will more easily ignite. Less water will be available to fight increasing numbers of fires. Often there is a fine line between manageable and unmanageable fires. More hot days certainly will not help the situation. The climate is already gradual- ly changing and scientists think that the warming trend is partly to ALLERGY FORMULA CONTAC 12 HOUR ALLERGY RELIEF Visiting Thunder Bay ? | Shopping ? Site Seeing ? Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are known to be increasing. By 2050, they could be double the concentrations of eighty years ago. Worse, other gases such as methane and nitrous oxide are also accumulation. These gases have much the same greenhouse effect as carbon dioxide, so will shorten the period forecasted to reach the doubling of all green- house gases. Increased forest fires will release yet more carbon which 4 THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF TERRACE BAY NOTICE to the RESIDENTS of TERRACE BAY Please note that the Municipal Office will be Youll Get Your Message Across Much Faster in the Classifieds will further add to an already greater greenhouse effect. Therefore, preventing wild fire becomes even more important. Because trees remove carbon from the air, locking it away for hundreds of years, planting trees and preventing forest fires can be your personal contribution to reduced carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This will lead to a healthier environment for all of us. CALLOUSES?} Corns? Remove them quickly and : easily. - Df €.
