Schreiber received the new 840 gallon-per-minute pumper from Fort Garry Industries at a cost of $157,972.80. Volunteer Fire Chief Peter Doig explained that the reason for purchasing the new pumper was to, "maintain minimum insurance premiums for property holders." There are twenty-two volun- teer firemen on the Schreiber Fire Department including Peter Doig and Deputy Fire Chief Gene Ross, A few specially trained men will be operating: the pumper. Schreiber councillors and many other people came out to watch a demonstration of how the shiny new truck works. Children delighted in sounding the sirens. Rescue unit The Sparkbusters raised $13,400.00 towards the price of a Rescue unit. The keys of the vehicle were turned over to the Township of Schreiber on Saturday, May 5 also. A two-hour open house was held at the Fire Station last Saturday to show the public both the new pumper and the rescue unit. The Schreiber Fire Station now has 2 pumpers, a utility van. a rescue unit, and a suburban (seasonal) in service. Peter Doig mentioned, "We get about 24 calls a year, not.includ- ing grass fires and false alarms. The Schreiber rescue unit is designed for coverage of federal and provincial properties and is not obliged to respond to acci- dents on Highway 17. The Schreiber Fire Department feel there is a moral obligation since they have the necessary equip- ment that is needed in case of an accident. The rescue unit covers the area of Highway 17 east from Gravel river west from Steel River. To fund these rescues, the municipality of Schreiber covers about 50% of the cost and the Joint Emergency Planning Program (JEPP) pays the remain- der. JEPP is a program designed whereby federal money is dis- posed by the provincial authori- ties to the municipality. this grant money received helps to operate continued on page 2 "Aslap in the face" says mixed ball Rep. Unhappy with new fee proposal By Angie Saunders The News Several angry ball team mem- bers, complaining about a $10.00 recreation non-resident fee, were among those present at the May 8th meeting of Schreiber Town Council. Reeve Mike Cosgrove and Councillors Tom Quinton, Ed Borutski, Ron McBride, and Lorraine Huard listened as mixed ball spokesman Pat Dalonen said, "We pay $10.00 rental per game, that's $2400.00 a year. It's a slap in the face. Why should 'Rec' have the right to say who has to pay and who doesn't? They can't pick on cer- tain people, especially when we're renting the facility. They've asked to collect fees already 2 weeks ago." Councillor Quinton explained, "That policy is not in affect. Personally, I think it is a good policy. Are we going to allow out-of-town residents to receive services at the same rate? This is not a fee placed to counteract Terrace Bay people." Pat Dalonen stated, " I pay the same rate in Terrace Bay. I don't want to see us pay $10.00 for non-residents. The Rec told us "We don't want to have anything to do with your league." How can they charge us now? I have no objections to paying 'Rec' dues, but do you think you could implement this in all sports instead of just baseball?" Councillor Lorraine Huard added, "We've had no complaint from a mixed ball player about user fees. Lonnie Connelly (executive of mixed ball) hasn't received complaints. You'll never * get anything with your attitude. I don't hear any people complain- ing with being slapped in the face." Mixed ball player Russel Saarinen stated, "Our league has bought a scoreboard and a shack with profits from our league for the rec field." Lorraine Huard also said, "The ball league is costing us money. Everything is costing us money." The Rec department's revenue is about $100,000 a year, while continued on page 2 r ~~ DIANE O'NEILL A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD. * Home * Business * Auto * Cottages * Recreational Vehicles * Etc. _ SIMCOE PLAZA TERRACE BAY 825 - 3246 "i TERRY O'NEILL a:
