Page 10, News, Tuesday, May 15, 1990 Lamprey program on Lake Superior Mr. S. M. Dustin, Manager of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans' Sea Lamprey Control Centre, has released the following information pertinent to the field program on Lakes Huron and Superior for 1990. The Department, acting as the Canadian Agent for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, has the responsibility for performing sea lamprey control in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes basin, and in the United States (New York) tributaries of Lake Ontario. Sea lamprey control depends mainly upon the carefully con- trolled application of selective toxicants (lampricides) to streams harboring sea lamprey larvae. At proper intervals (normally three to five years) retreatments are necessary to prevent the escape- ment of reestablished sea lamprey populations. Detection and eval- uation of sea lamprey larval pop- ulations is the function of stream survey teams who systematically examine all Great Lakes' tribu- taries using electro-shockers or a granular formulation of lampri- cide. Assessment of sea lamprey spawning runs is carried out through the use of portable traps fished in selected streams, and is also by means of permanent traps incorporated into sea lamprey barrier dams which are being built to prevent lamprey access into headwater areas of difficult- to-treat tributaries. Sections of the following trib- utaries to Lake Superior are scheduled for lampricide during 1990: Cranberry Creek, Harmony River, Goulais River, Chippewa River, Batchawana River, Carp River, Michipicoten River, Pic River, Gravel River, Cypress River, Wolf River, and Neebing-McIntyre Floodway. The lampricide selectively destroys larval lamprey but is non-toxic to humans, pets, live- stock, and other animals. Some non-target fish species may be Moose By S. In addition, any aquat- ic organisms such as bait min- nows, that are confined artificial- ly in the stream water, may be susceptible to the lampricide because of crowding and han- dling. Those who keep such organisms should consider using an alternate supply of water dur- ing the treatment period. Stream surveys will be con- ducted on approximately 47 Lake Huron and 75 Lake Superior trib- utaries, in a continuing effort to identify and evaluate new or reestablished populations of lar- val sea lamprey.
