The Tory Government has muz- zled the Opposition and cut off the debate on the GST Bill in the House of Commons in order to push it through. The Bill has now gone to the Senate where it will undergo the legislative process, before it becomes law on January be he Bg Mr. Belair is concerned about the reprecussions of the new sales tax. "At the present time, the existing 13.5 per cent manufac- turing tax on the wholesale price ($100.00) of an armchair is $13.50. On January 1, 1991 the 7 per cent GST will apply to the retail price ($300.00) of the same armchair and tax will be $21.00. this is an increase in tax of $7.50. As well, Canadians will see an increase of the 7 per cent GST on their Hydro Bill. Ontario Hydro has indicated their intention of increasing their rates by approxi- mately 6 or 7%. This will result in a total increase of 13 or 14 per cent. Even the purchase of a new home will bear the brunt of a 5 per cent tax on the total sale price. It's incredible!" Mr. Belair went on to say, "the Conservative Government has ignored the Canadian people. They are going ahead with the implementation of this new sales tax even though the latest polls show that 80 per cent of the pop- ulation are against the GST." Mr. Belair reiterated, "Right now, it is more expensive to live in Northern Ontario. On January 1, 1991 when we are hit by this devastating GST, the Conservative government will bé guaranteeing that Canadians aré taxed from the cradle to the grave." Volunteer Week in Ontario April 22- 28 is volunteer week in Ontario. This is our chance to say Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who make the Adult Learning Program a success. When we began in 1986, we were concerned about how to get people involved. How could you ask someone to give a minimum of three hours a week for at least six months to help someone else learn to read and write? Well, out problem was not how to get tutors. We had 25 volunteers at our first tutor training and more were coming forward all the time. Our problem was learners. Where were this 20% of the adult population that needed help with reading and writing? Over the three years we have had about 50 people involved in the program as learners. But we still haven't been able to use all our tutors. For those who have a learner, the ATTENTION Mixed slow pitch players. _ Anyone interested in forming a league contact: D. For those who haven't, it has been frustrating. Since this is International Literacy Year we have had a rush of new students. we still have room for any more. we look forward to finding more learners and training more tutors in the near future. Over the 3 years, volunteers have donated about 100,000 hours to the Adult Learning Program. this includes time donated by our hard working Literacy Advisory Committee, tutor hours, fund raising activi- ties, the staff at the Township of Schreiber office and all the other community groups who help us to provide the best program possi- ble. A special mention goes to , the staff at our schools who have helped with advice and materials. The Adult Learning Program could not function without all these volunteers, All of you help- ing have made this program become a valuable service dedi- cated to helping adults reach their educational goals. A contractor was in to look at the arena lights. The hydro inspector and the contractor agreed there is a problem with the breaker which the contractor will replace. Erie Kettle, Bill McDougall, and Dean Main are authorized to attend the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Recreation Association (NWOMRA) Zone Conference in Geraldton, April 20-22. Dean Main is to attend the Northwestern Ontario Professional Recreation Society (NWOPRS) Annual Conference/General Meeting in Dryden on Aril 29- May 1. Councillor C. Joubert will attend the North of Superior Tourism Annual Meeting in Thunder Bay on April 12.
