Adelaide Beaulieu, who works at the Terrace Bay/Schreiber News on Mondays, was a well-known Canadian speed skater from 1943-1956. Addie Beaulieu (nee Carter), from Dalhousie, New Brunswick, won 54 cups, medals, and tro- phies during her 13 year speed skating career. Speed skating is a very chal- lenging sport that has participants racing on blades that are over 15 inches long. These races are 220, 440, 880 yards, or 3/4 or 1 mile lengths. Addie mentioned that she practiced about 2 hours a day. After practice, many of the skaters would head to the local soda shop before heading home where they would retire at about 10:00 p.m. Skaters needed their rest to ensure energy for the next day's practice. Addie Carter was the Ist win- ner of the Canadian Legion Provincial Speed Skating Championships Senior Ladies' title which she won at the Forum by: P. Irving trophy was presented to Addie 3 years in a row for holding the Maritime title for Ladies Senior Speed Skating. Being the Maritime Champ, Addie would compete in Boston, Mass. In 1954, she came third in the New England Golden Blades. Addie's home group of Dalhousie skaters won 15 out of 21 events in one Boston arena competition. Not bad, consider- ing there were 380 skaters involved. Addie also competed in Lake Placid, New York, where she always managed to get to take' home the honor of winning or coming in close to the top. Adelaide Carter's Speed Skating career included the years from 1943- 1956. When she retired in 1956 she was still the Senior Maritime Champ. Addie has also done a lot for the community of Terrace Bay since she moved here in 1960 as a new bride with Roger Beaulieu. Addie Beaulieu pounded the pavement between Terrace Bay and Schreiber on her own time and gas expenses to raise money from hockey pools for worth- while charities. The McCausland Hospital received $2616.25 from 1977-79 from Addie's hard work. This money went to the new building fund, a Vivopak, and a Vitalor. She raised $300.00 for Birchwood Terrace which went towards their Tuck Shop. Money totalling $550.00 was raised and given to Schreiber/Terrace Bay Mentally Retarded children. In 1979, The Arthritis Society of Terrace Bay received a cheque for $550.00. The unselfish efforts of Addie Beaulieu were greatly appreciated by everyone. Her money- raising reached a total of over $3800.00. Way to go Addie! Photo by Angie Saunders New look for OPP cruisers (Toronto)-- The Ontario Provincial Police will be unveil- ing the new, bold look of its cruisers with photo opportunities for media who contact their local detachments. Most noticeable to the motor- ing public will be a change from the familiar two-tone black and white police cruisers to an all- white vehicle with highly visible, reflective blue and gold decal stripes down both sides. "The new look to our cruisers reflects the new look of the OPP in the 1990s," said OPP Commissioner Thomas O'Grady. "It's quite a change from the black and white design intro- duced in 1941." The use of decals on the all- white vehicles, prompted by man- ufacturer' plans to phase out pro- duction of two-tone vehicles, will result in a $100,000 a year saving which is the estimated cost of painting the 1,200 vehicle fleet in the traditional black and white pattern. The new-look vehicles will be completely phased in across Ontario by 1993. In addition to the gold and blue stripe, the vehi- cles will also have the OPP crest on the doors and the district "1- 800" number on the rear panel as well as the word 'police' on the front fender and rear. "Studies have shown that white reflects more light that any other color. Combine that with the reflective decal markings and we have a police service vehicle which we believe will be even / more visible than the old fash- ioned black and white cruiser," said Commissioner O'Grady.
