Grades The News 4-6 will be travelling to Rainbow The school students of Falls with MNR staff to help Schreiber and Terrace Bay are doing their part to help out the environment. In conjunction with National Wildlife Week, Education Week, Earth Day, and Pitch-in Week, Schreiber Public School has planned 3 weeks of environmen- plant trees, make owl nests, and brushpile hideouts. Grades JK to 3 will be learning about the 3 R's-. Recycle, reuse, and renew. Energy conservation and alterna- tive energy sources will be learned and put into use when the Grades 7 & 8 make and show their environmental projects on May 3. All of Schreiber Public School will participate in a garbage free lunch and help out with pitch-in week by cleaning up the school yard. Terrace Bay Public School is also having a clean-up day for their school yard in May. Grades 1-4 have visited Costa's, A&W, and Hamilton's to inspect. the Students from Terrace Bay Public School set out a display in support of Earth Day and Pitch-in Week. By Lisa Stewart Terrace Bay Sometimes we feel as if we are too busy to worry about global issues. We lose touch with nature and the plight of our less fortu- nate brothers and sisters. We neglect to take time to walk in the woods, breath the fresh air with a Photo by Angie Saunders Earth Day... Time to think special awareness, or maybe drink from a stream. If you have not partaken in these simple plea- sures lately, you should take the opportunity now because the forests (what is left of them), air and water of this planet are increasingly filled with litter-and polutants. April 22nd is Earth Day, a time to think about the future of the earth; a chance to ponder our role in the destruction of the plan- et, and our contribution to the unhappiness of others. It is more importantly a day to resolve to save the earth and to take positive action. The first Earth Day was cele- brated in 1970 when more than packaging of certain products. Companies with products that have excessive packaging will be written to by the students. Grades 1-8 want to challenge the town on April 23 to not use any cars and trucks but to walk around. A teacher mentioned that every child is contributing something to improve the environment. Students of St. Martin's, Holy The kids are all right! Local school students hel Angels, and both campuses of Lake Superior High School will be participating in a clean-up day for their school yards. The school students are set- ting a good example for all to fol- low by helping out the environ- ment. See what you can do to help them out by participating and cleaning up your town on Earth Day. A&W Birthday Party The hub of activity in Terrace 'Bay on Saturday, April 7th cer- tainly had to be in the' Recreation Centre. Besides» a Mixed Bonspiel and Figure Skating Carnival going on, the A& W held their annual Birthday Party for the Great Root Bear. Our customers who always enjoy our delicious, flavorful food and friendly service, were also treated to free cake, prizes, and some were even lucky enough to get a hug from the Birthday Boy (Bear) himself. Several draws were held for 15" teddies, beach towels, and a floral arrangement donated by Flowers' n Things of Schreiber. A coloring contest was also judged and a "jelly bean guess contest" was won. The winners were: 15" ted- dies- Sherri Fisher and Sherri Jowitt, A&W beach towels- Layla Vandergraaf and Ryan: Harris, Jelly bean guess- Rhonda ' Larivee, Floral arrangement- Sandy & Barry Dixon. The coloring contest winners were: "Peter Ryan, Nicole Falzetta, Katie Maenpaa,: Mathew Ryan, Siobban Falzetta, Amanda McWatters, Rhonda Bolan, Andrea McWatters, Rhonda Larivee, Jennifer Figliomeni, Darren Speziale, and Jason Ryan. If you are a lucky winner and have not picked up your prize please do so. On your next visit to A&W, please be sure to have a look at our two awards on the wall by the kitchen door. We're very proud of them. the Merit Award is for achieving excellence on all of our Quality Assurance and Assistance Reports during 1989. Our other award is for being a Finalist in the Onion Ring Olympics last month in Toronto. Be sure to congratulate Vicky Jameus and Cheryl Madore on a job well done. We didn't win the Gold but we were right up there. Now, twenty years later, the state of the envi- ronment is critical, and an esti- mated 200 million people around the globe will gather to honor Mother Earth. Remember, it is not simply about cleaning up garbage but respecting all living creatures. You may not be harming the environment intentionally, but it is your responsibility to be aware of how your actions affect others, and once you have become edu- cated, to share your knowledge.
