Page 6, News, Tuesday, April 10, 1990 Engines believed to have been working normally By Angie Saunders The News The engines of the Air Ontario jet that crashed March 10,1989 were operating normally during take-off believes chief crash investigator Joe Jackson. The Fokker F-28's Rolls- Royce engines were torn down by investigators who found nothing abnormal. Three witnesses, from among the 46 survivors, have testified about the unusual sounds they heard during the take-off from Dryden last year. F The manager of the Dryden Airport last March, Peter Loutit, said he heard the sound of a flame-out (an engine failure) while watching the attempt of the jet to lift-off. Joe Jackson agreed with Justice Virgil Moshansky's inter- im report that the jet's wings, cov- ered with ice, snow and slush, were a major factor in causing the -crash. "The Runway was (also) to some extent contaminated with snow, ice or slush which adverse- ly affected air craft performance." Ladies Golf Club - General Weeting Fucaday rtperct 17, 1990 7 25O fet. Box 3415, Thunder Bay, Ont., P7B SJ9 ' Dhara: 2Ak.02220 On March 10, 1990, the F-28 began smashing into trees just after it had left the runway. The plane broke into 3 pieces and caught fire after going down in dense bush. Jackson also said there were a few factors that could have affected the crew on the day of the crash: the weather, the mal- ~ function of an on-board motor that started the plane's engines and the aircraft's exit lights, and problems with a radio. These factors might have affected the captain George Morwood and co- pilot Keith Mills' (both deceased) ability to assess the situation and make decisions. The reason why the crew took off without having de-iced the plane is unknown. the machines which record the cockpit conver- sation and instrument settings of the plane were melted in the fire. Schreiber allotted $2.046 million By Angie Saunders The News A Schreiber Town Council Meeting was held on Tuesday, March 27. Present were Reeve Mike Cosgrove and Councillors- Ed Borutski, Tom Quinton, and Lorraine Huard, and Staff: Aurel Gauthier, Peter Doig, and J. Este. The Ministry of Environment have allotted Schreiber $2.046 million to upgrade the Sewer Treatment Plant for 1990-91 allo- cations. The remaining 22% of the cost will be split between the Ministry of Northern Mines and Development and the Township of Schreiber. The upgrading should start in July and be possi- bly in operation by 1991. The library board gave their annual report. The library will possibly move to the Rec Centre temporarily because the floors in the building will not handle the weight of the books. The build- ing will not be repaired but torn down eventually. Doctor Geran will be leaving Schreiber. . There was a fire inspection done of the council office and the town hall. It was suggested that the council should have smoke detectors or dry-wall ceiling for better fire protection. A dog pound is to be made first thing in the spring. Concern were brought up about the weight room at the Rec Centre. The room is too small for the amount of people that have memberships. Possibly the games room can be used as a weight room. The floor also has to be reinforced but the weight room has to be closed down to be fixed. The Canadian Colitis Foundation will be selling tickets in Schreiber. 3 There has been a problem with the CP Railway crossing on Railway Street being blocked for long periods of time. A. Gauthier, R.
