Wednesday, September 27, 1989 Dear John: I'm a mathematician: who's a pro with numbers and equations, but not so good with lawn care. My lawn has dozens of ugly bare spots - can I plant new grass seed in the fall, or should I wait until spring? Dear Math Major: If you think -your lawn's num- ber has come up, now is a good time to go back to square one by reseeding or planting new seed. Count on fall's moderate soil tem- peratures and moisture levels to encourage good results from new seed. Zero in on bald patches by rak- ing them lightly to create small grooves that will hold the seed. Choose a high-quality variety of seed that will grow well in your particular climate - St. Augustine or zoysia for warm climate, fes- cue, rye or bluegrass for cool. Sprinkle seed over the bare spots and tamp the ground lightly with your foot. Figure on lightly watering the oversceded areas often to keep the soil moist for the first few weeks until the seeds germinate, and fertilize with a mixture of three parts nitrogen to one part phosphorus to two parts potassium. Wait to mow the new growth until it's several inches tall, and you'll be on your way to a lawn that's a perfect ten. Dear John: I've been dethatching my lawn in the fall for years, but my neigh- bor does his in the spring. Have I been doing it wrong? Dear D. Thatcher: Not at all - according to the lawn care folks at John Deere, fall is the best time to remove thatch. Thatch becomes a problem when the layer of decaying grass clip- pings and other materials that accumulate.on the lawn's surface becomes more than one-half-inch thick. This is especially common in fall, when dead leaves help thicken the thatch layer. A thick layer of thatch can prevent sun- 58 Laurier Contemporary wood home, close to schools and shopping, den overlook- ing spacious vaulted entry, large}: backyard, external entrance to base-|: ment, large ground level deck; front and back, 30' living-dining area, modern kitchen, family room vaulted ceiling with library overlooking, 3} | 'Ibedrooms, master bedroom, ensuite] ; Noe bathroom with 2 toilets, 12' closet, library access, external balcony. Since roots need these ! things now to help them grow undergiound during the winter, fall thatch removal is important. Check a plug of grass and soil to measure. thatch buildup. If it's too thick, you can use an attach- ment on your mower that slices into the thatch layer and chops it into picces that you rake up later. Another. option is to rent a dethatching machine. Dear John: Now that I've harvested my vegetables, is it necessary to pull the stalks from the garden, or can I leave them to decompose? Dear Stumped by Stalks: You should always remove the stalks and vines from your garden - along with any rotting produce that might have fallen off the plants. Although you could think Icaving the plants behind will help enrich the soil, stalks and vines left to decompose in the garden provide an idcal winter home for insects and discase. Bag the plants and throw them away. Don't add them to your compost pile; the pile may not heat up enough to destroy dis- cases, and can actually infest your garden next year. It's better to get rid of the Icftover stalks.
