Call ly be feeling the change in the weather. Heat stroke is an emergency Situation that requires immediate recognition and prompt treatment. Dogs do not tolerate high tem- perature as well as humans do. They depend upon rapid breath- ing to exchange warm air for cool air. Accordingly, when air temper- ature is close to body temperature cooling by rapid breathing is not an efficient process. Common situations which pre- dispose to overheating or heat stroke in dogs are: 1. Being left in a car in hot weather, even with the window open. 2. Being confined on concrete runs; chained without shade in hot weather. 3. Being of a short-nosed breed, especially a bull-dog or pug. 4. Being muzzled while put under a dryer )this can happen in a grooming parlor). 5. Suffering from asthma or any other respiratory diseases. Heat stroke begins with rapid, frantic, noisy breathing. The tongue and mucus membranes are bright red, the saliva is thick and the dog frequently vomits. His temperature is high, some- times up to 106 degrees F. If the . condition is allowed to go unchecked, coma and death ensue. - For mild cases, remove your dog to a cooler area, such as an air conditioned building or car. If his temperature is over 104 degrees F call your vet immedi- ately. He might advise you to immerse him in a tub of cold water. no other choice but to follow these procedures. A two hour drive to a vets office when the dog is in the pro- cess of heat stroke can prove fatal. To prevent this from happen- ing: 1. Do not expose dogs such as pugs, bulldogs etc... to prolonged heat. 2. Restrict exercise during the heat of the day in summer. 3. Crate a dog in a wine crate not an enclosed crate. 4.
