Page 12 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Wednesday, July 19, 1989 The Terrace Bay and Schreiber Recreation Departments in conjunction with the Ontario Sailing Association offered an introductory boardsailing course Wednesday, July 5. The course was held at White Sand Beach and dog's water that you take with Matt Thompson and David Abela taught 11 people how to ride the wind. Photu by Dave Chmara Taking Rover on camping trip requires planning By Alice Scott Summer is camping and boat- ing season for many northern res- idents and their dogs. There are a few preparations that you should think of before starting on your trip. Everything depends on the type of trip you are planning to take. If you are just visiting your local camping area, your prepara- tions will be simpler than if you're planning a week long canoe trip. With any trip you should try to keep your dog on his normal diet. But if you are on a canoe trip and packing light, then individual pre- packaged food is the best type to bring, such as Kennel Ration Burgers. It is in plastic bags and single servings, which eliminates wasted food and keeps food fresh. I place all my food in garbage bags or plastic bags to keep the smell from enticing bears. I also hang it up with our own food bags to prevent any animals from reaching it. If you're at a campsite where your car can be parked close by, then just leave the food in your car or camper. A change in water can also affect your pets digestion. Bring water from home to mix with the local water. This is impossible on a canoe trip; but you should take the same precautions with your your own. Boil the water for five minutes and then allow it to cool as this prevents your dog from contact- ing parasites from the water. First aid supplies are impor- tant. It is very easy for your dog to cut his pad or receive cuts and scratches from brush and stones. Carry an antibiotic, such as polysporin, and alcohol pads for cleaning wounds. A pressure bandage can also be useful in an emergency situa- tion. Check to make sure you bring any medication that your dog may be on, such as heart- worm medication etc... Teach your dog at a young age that the boat or canoe is not a playground and that they must stay in one position, especially in a canoe. Many state parks in the U.S. are starting to refuse dogs. Make sure you keep your dog on a lead while on the trail or at your campsite. Most provincial parks accept dogs, but if people continue to be careless, and also don't clean up after their dogs, then we could lose the privilege of having our pets with us. Put a flea and tick collar on your dog when you are in the woods. Lyme disease is spreading and ticks are the main carriers. Prevention is the best cure. Remember you are responsible for your pet.
