Photo by Dave Chmara Local figure skaters win big in Thunder Bay competition & The weekend of March 3rd & 4th fast approached; it was time for Professional Coach Kerry Culhane, 10 Schreiber & 13 Terrace Bay Figure Skaters - along with their parents - to pack their skates and costumes; they had prepared themselves to do their best with great big smiles; pounding hearts and knocking knees, as they headed to the Thunder Bay Competition. This was the skaters second competi- tion for the year; but the last to end the skating season and what a performance between the two clubs a total of 16 medals were received; Schreiber - 2 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze. Terrace Bay - 4 Gold, 3 Silver 3 4th place ribbons. Competitors came from Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, Sioux Lookout, Vermillion Bay, Atikokan, Fort William, Thunder Bay, Red Rock, Nipigon, Schreiber and Terrace Bay Figure Skating Clubs. Friday March 3rd, the sched- uled events started at 3:00 p.m. and went until 9:00 p.m. with the conclusion of medal presenta- tions. During these hours the fol- lowing events were held with the following skaters in their Flights (groups). Preliminary Ladies B (1 1/2 min. solo) Fit. 2 - Erin Callaghan - T.B.E.S.C. placed Sth Fit. 3 - Lindsay Miller - S.F.S.C. placed 3rd. Bronze Medal Alyson Mannisto - T.B.F.S.C. placed 4th Ribbon Melissa Makolin - T.B.F.S.C. placed 7th Fit. 4 - Karen Baldwin - T.B.F.S.C. placed Ist. Gold Medal Preliminary Mens B (1 1/2 min. solo) Jason Imbeault - S.F.S.C. placed 1st Gold Medal Preliminary Ladies A ( 1-1 1/2 min. solo) Shauna Singleton - T.B.ES.C. placed 1st Gold Medal Pre-Juvenile Ladies B (2 min. solo) Fit. 1 Crystal Luxmore - T.B.ES.C. placed 7th Flt. 3 - Catrina MacKay - T.B.ES.C. placed 8th Fit. 4 - Jessica Notwell - T.B.ES.C. placed 4th Ribbon Saturday March 4th, the scheduled events started at 8:00 a.m. and concluded at 9:00 p.m. with the conclusion of medal pre- sentations. Pre-Novice Ladies (3 min. solo) Kim Callaghan - T.B.F.S.C. placed 6th Pre-Novice Mixed Pairs A (1 1/2 min.) Jason Imbeault - S.F.S.C. & Erin Callaghan - T.B.F.S.C. received Gold Medals as they were the only pair, the other pair had to drop out at last minute; so Jason & Erin were allowed to perform, but their achievements aren't recognized in the protocol. Year's Baby, Ed and Sylvie Angus, with a gift from the council. William Randa asked for council's support to obtain loans under the Ministry of Housing's Low Rise Rehabilitation Program in order to upgrade his apartment buildings. Dave Fulton said the Ministry may be willing to give its approval and said he would pursue the matter with them. Council was asked to make a donation towards the Lifeline System, however, council wants to meet with someone from the Auxiliary to the McCausland Hospital for more information on the system. In particular, council wants to know more on the back- ground of the system as well as who will be responsible for its b operation. The issue of Physicians from other provinces practising in Ontario was not sufficiently addressed by the Ontario govern- ment (Minister of Health Elinor Caplan) and council will be. send- ing another letter to the Premier in order that their concerns will be answered. Council has proclaimed May 12, 1989 to be Canada Health Day in Terrace Bay. The Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to council congratulating merabers on their election victories. The Chamber also expressed a desire to meet with council, which is a member of the Chamber, to determine how the two can work together to improve the town. Some businesses have made donations, but there is still $28,000 out of the original $35,000 left to raise yet.
