Wednesday, March 8; 1989 . - __TERRACE'BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS: Page 9 - Hints for filing your tax return Each January, Revenue Canada, Taxation mails an income tax return to those who filed a return the year before. You can also get this tax booklet from your post office or district taxa- tion office as of mid-February. The booklet includes a return, schedules, and a guide that explains in detail how to report your income and submit your claims. Since tax reform went into effect for the 1988 taxation year, this year's guide will pro- vide you with all of the informa- tion and examples you will need to understand how these changes have effected your return. Your documents You will be ready to fill out your income tax return once you have gathered all of your infor- mation slips and receipts relating to your deductions and credit amounts. These slips show your income tax, contributions to the Canada Pension Plan, unemployment insurance premiums, union dues, and so on. If, by the beginning of March, you have not received all of the information slips and receipts. you need to complete your return, contact the organizations respon- sible for sending them to you (your employer, for example.) If, towards the end of April you still have not received them, complete your tax return to the best of your knowledge, add a note explaining your estimates and give the name and address of the organization which did not send you the needed documents. If youtmail-in-your return without the slips and receipts requested, your deductions may be disallowed and your tax refund cheque delayed. ask for and how to claim them. If the answer to your question is not in the guide, contact your district taxation office immediate- ly to get the missing information before April 30. Your tax booklet contains two copies of the income tax return. First, you fill out the working copy, line by line. Make sure you complete the identification area correctly and accurately. Your surname, given name and initials, and full address, marital Status and social insurance num- ber should be properly indicated. The identification area is very important. If it is complete, delays will be avoided in process- ing your return. Now enter all your income as specified on each line concerning the type of income you have, using the corresponding figures on your information slips. If you are employed, the first amount to enter in your return is that of your earings before deductions shown in Box C of your T4 slip. Then, if applicable, report any commissions, tips, gratuities or adult training allowances you have received. Enter all your other taxable income on the appropriate lines. Make certain that you claim any other deductions to which you are entitled; they will reduce your taxable income. Remember that for most of these deductions you must attach a slip to your return. Once you have done this, use Tax Table A in the guide to calcu- late 17 per cent of the total of your personal amounts. You then add the credit amount for your charitable donations to this calcu- lation to determine your total non-refundable credits. Tax Payable All of these calculations will bring you to your taxable income and your federal tax payable. For most tax-payers, calculating the federal tax payable is simplified by the tax table in the guide. The guide lists the federal and provin- cial tax rate - and individual sur- tax - payable for each different income range. Enter your federal tax payable, your individual sur- tax and your provincial tax payable on your tax return. Next are the refundable tax credits you may be able to claim if you meet all the conditions. These credits will be deducted directly from your tax payable. Many taxpayers have already paid all, part of, or more than their tax payable during the year through deductions from their pay cheques (see your T4 slips), or by paying tax by instalments. Enter the total amount of your federal tax deducted from your pay and show your instalment payments on the appropriate lines of your return. The difference between your tax payable and your total refund- able tax credits (which include the tax you have already paid) will be your balance due or your refund. You will have a balance owing if you have not paid enough tax during the previous year. In that case, you must send in a cheque or money order for the amount due, payable to the Receiver General for Canada. If you have overpaid your income tax during the year or if the amount of your refundable tax credits exceeds your tax payable, Back a with Revenue Canada, Taxation will, of course, send you a refund 'cheque. : There you are - you have com- pleted the working copy of your return! Keep it with a copy of the supporting documents in your files. Now all you have to do is check it, carefully transfer the information from your working copy to the tax return you will send to Revenue Canada, Taxation, check your calculations once again, sign your return, attach all the required schedules, information slips and receipts, and enclose,a cheque or money order if you have a balance payable. Finally, be sure to mail it by April 30 at the latest in the enve- lope provided. Fighter Easter Seals Deductions now credits How to complete the return Start by carefully reading the tax return to find out which lines apply to your situation. If you are uncertain about your responsibility to report a source of income or your right to make a claim, consult the section of the tax guide covering the corre- sponding line numbers to know which deductions and amounts to As. you complete. this. year's. return, you will notice that as a result of tax reform, the personal exemptions and many deductions which you found on page 2 of last year's retum are now included as non-refundable tax credits. These credits are used to reduce your federal income tax. The term "non-refundable" refers to the fact that the difference between your federal income tax and these credits is not refunded to you. To calculate these credits, you must determine how much you can claim as your personal amounts. Everyone is entitled to the basic personal amount. Check all the other amounts carefully to be sure you did not leave out any you are entitled to claim. « ss Floral Art & BRIDAL CENTRE *" WEDDING STATIONARY *" FRESH OR SILK FLOWERS " HEADPIECES, HATS & ACCESSORIES * UNIQUE CAR TOPS & CAKES " SATIN SHOES (COLOURED GLAZED & WATERPROOFED) "WEDDING GIFT IDEAS RENTAL DECORATIONS FOR CHURCH & HALL Including Rental Cakes For out-of-town Weddings "We welcome out-of-town weddings" We are now performing ~ - a unique variety of extra personalized services for weddings Call for details anytime!
