The tank was left at the Rossport dock two months ago after the company towing it encountered a storm. The owner of the tug boat that left the tank in Rossport is now frozen in in Sault Ste. Marie. Oil tank will sit at Rossport dock until next springtime By Dave Chmara As you drive out towards Rossport, the scenery is beautiful. But, as you enter the town, and look out towards the docks, you'll notice a large (a very large), oil tank with fading white paint and rust sitting at the dock. The tank has been there for the past two months and residents in Rossport want the eyesore out of their town. Fred Broenclle, a tug boat oper- ator based in Thunder Bay, was hauling two of the oil tanks down south when he encountered a storm. Broenelle took shelter but one of the oil tanks was banged up on the rocks and he had to leave it behind, and tow the other good tank to its final destination. Two months later, there the oil tank sits. Tied to the dock in Rossport and residents there are fed up says Will Robinson with the local Ministry of Natural Resources. Robinson attended a meeting held in Rossport Dec. 15 which saw about 15 residents of Rossport, and Chairman of the Local 'Services Board Doug Stefurak, gather with Fred Broenelle to find a solution to the problem of getting the oil tank out of the town. Stefurak said the residents have been very patient with Broenelle and aired their displeasure with the fact the tank is still in town. Broenelle did however, make an honest effort at getting back to tow away the tank, but as of last weck, was frozen in at Sault Ste. Marie with his tug boat. He simply ran out of time and, as a result, he is unable to tow the tank away until next spring. This was the first face to face meeting the residents of Rossport have had with Broenclle and he apologized to the town at the meet- ing for the inconvenience he has caused. It was finally decided that next spring, as soon as is possible, Brocnelle will return to Rossport and tow away the tank. He will actually arrive before the ice has broken up and will break through the ice to move out the tank. Broenelle will cut off the bot- tom of the stairway of the oil tank in order to eliminate the chances of people climbing on top of it. Stefurak said Broenelle will also video tape and inspect the water intake system for the town for the inconvenience he caused. "Everyone is satisfied it (the Photo by Dave Chmara tank) will get out. Unfortunately we'll have to look at it for another four months," said Stefurak. "But now we have more to look forward to at the spring ice break-up," he said. Since the oil tank is on Crown land, Robinson said Broenelle could have ended up in court facing stiff fines. But at the meeting it was agreed that the Ministry will give Broenelle a deadline of May 10 for towing away the tank. Robinson said if the ice is gone in April, the tank will be moved out then. Broenelle had to obtain a permit for the tank to be able to stay where it is until then, and he will be paying rent, in effect, dur- ing that time. Robinson. added all those con- cerned will be keeping in very, very close contact with Broenelle.
