[ >) Northern Ontario OUSINESS Proper nutrition for dogs a lifelong task for good health By Alice Scott Few people realize that puppies are still growing at a year old, espe- cially large breeds, and need the extra nutrition they receive from puppy food. By the time they are 18 months they have reached their adult growth and are ready for an adult food. This food should be added grad- ually over a one week period to the puppy food to give the puppy a chance to adjust to the change in his diet. Obesity is a very common prob- lem in adult and senior dogs. We have a tendency to give our ani- mals treats that they don't really need in their everyday diet. If your dog is on a good quality food and receives the proper exer- cise required for his breed and size, then he doesn't need to have table scraps or bones. Try to give him nylabones, commercial dog cookies or home- made cookies. Never give your dog chocolate since many dogs have been found to have a severe allergic reaction to chocolate. You can give a few carrots, peas or yogurt if you find he is becom- ing bored with his food, but they are not a necessity. Once your dog is seven years old he has started his senior years. At this stage in his life he might need a lower calorie and fat diet. Companies are now providing the public with dog food especially formulated for the senior dog. Seniors dogs have a tendency to be less active, and also may have a change in their digestive system. It is a good idea to ask your vet to recommend a good senior dog food. If your dog has problems with his liver or kidneys your vet can provide you with the proper food, but you must follow these diets or you can put your dogs life in danger. Remember that common sense is the best tool you can use to keep your dog healthy. Next week Do's and Don'ts at Christmas for your dog and cat. Enter the Dog Trivia Contest & Win 1.
