Health unit opens new and larger office location By Dave Chmara An open house for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit was held at the new Schreiber offices located across the street from the medical centre. It was a bright, sunny day for the opening which allowed many people to drop by the new and larger office. The offices actually opened six weeks ago and are staffed by public health nurse Cathy Withers and Brenda Asmussen, secretary Estelle - Morrill and public health inspector Mike Reid. Withers said some people aren't aware of all the services which the health unit provides. "We go to the high school and elementary schools and do baby visits as well. We're out in the community a lot," said Withers. The centre is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and provides services to the communi- ties of Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Rossport and Jackfish. The public health inspectors ter- ritory is somewhat larger covering _ the above towns as well as Marathon, Manitouwadge and White River. Public health nurses are regis- tered nurses with additional univer- sity education in public health. They assist the individual, the fami- ly and the community by coun- selling, teaching and coordinating community resources, The health unit offers services such as dental, nutrition, speech pathology and communication, immunization, in addition to other counselling services. Patients discharged from the hospital may receive home visits from a public health nurse, who would teach the family to cope with the convalescence period, help relieve the patient's and family's anxiety by finding answers to their questions and, should further ser- Continued on page 10 By Dave Chmara There was something for every- body to learn at the 6th Annual Trappers Education Workshop held at the Schreiber Legion Nov. 26. Educational films about wolves and bears were shown by the Ministry of Natural Resources, there were skinning demonstrations and a competition as well as many people on hand with a wealth of information. Afterwards, a dinner and dance was held. Rosaire Garneau, president of the Trappers Association, explained how to properly skin ani- mals such as beavers, martins, fox, mink, and otters. Garneau said demonstrations like this help trappers to increase their knowledge. It takes about five days, at room temperature to dry a beaver pelt and only one day to dry a martin pelt. Gameau said this is because the pelt of a beaver if greasier than a martin's. "Proper cutting and drying tech- niques means you can get more when you sell," said Garneau. "You always try to get as much fur showing as possible," said Garneau. "By splitting the tail and showing the legs, this improves the presentation of the fur." He said a top class martin could fetch $200 and the average martin sells for about $90. A large beaver sells for roughly $100, fox for $75 to $100, a good fisher for $200 to $250, about $75 to $100 for a good otter and, surprisingly, only $50 to $60 for a mink. Stewart Riddell, a fully quali- fied trapping instructor, watched the skinning demonstration, and, after only a couple of minutes had learned something new. Riddell used to cut the excess skin and fur from the edges of a pinned down fur. During the demonstration, Riddell saw Rene Garneau cut only the skin, but not the fur.
