He's going to have to rebuild a team which won its third consecu- tive Northwest Ontario champi- onship last year. As the coach of the Lake Superior High School Senior Boys Volleyball team, Roberts faces no easy task. "All the power hitters we had last year are gone," he told the News. ""We're working very hard to keep the tradition of Lake Superior High School as the 'vol- leyball school' of the North Shore." As 'principal' of that 'volley- ball school,' Roberts will have to rely on the three returning veter- ans to help teach and lead the team. The trio of Captain Harry Kaari, Andy Bonnema and Kaarlo Lukkonen have returned from last - season. Kaari told the News defence will be the team's greatest asset. "We've got the height on block- ing." He said that the team's ability to block helped them win the northwestern Ontario roundlast year against some good hitting teams. On the offensive front, 17- year-old Kaari, who has been . playing volleyball for five years, said he is confident Centre Mike Duhaime will set up some good plays. During last Thursday's prac- tice, Duhaime was setting up an impressive number of well-placed spiking opportunities. Other team members this year include: Darren Riley, Landon Klassen, Pat Hanley, Jamie Speer, Bill Solly,'Trevor Mikus. Captain Harry Kaari practises his spiking. Terrace Bay Requires Part - Time Team Manager Shawn Prince is an integral part of the charges as well. He served volleys to the seven members who were on hand for last Thursday's practice to help them set up plays. The Lake Superior Knights are polishing their armour for the sea- son opener on Oct. 3. when they face the Nipigon/Red Rock Lakers. Besides the Nip-Rock team, the Knights will face Geraldton and Marathon in the west division of the North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA). Each team will play the others twice. Six regular-season games isn't exactly a staggering number by any standards, but considering the chronic problems associated with travelling in the North to be competitive, it's the only solution. As winners of the Northwest- Happy 24th Cookie From Guess Who? em area last year, the team trav- elled to Sudbury for the Ontario finals along with 11 other teams. Roberts said some of teams the local boys faced in the finals had played over 100 regular and tour- nament games in a season. Although there is no hope of obtaining that much experience in this part of the province, there are some goals to aim for. The local volleyball program has had at least two players move up the ranks to play varsity ball. Roberts said one former Knight played with Cambrian College's' volleyball team in Sudbury last year, and his own son Kevin won a place this year with Brock University's Badgers of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association.
