I am very upset that Mayor Harris could even have conceived such an idea. In my opinion, if the people of Toronto can't get rid of their garbage where they live, put it in theirown back yards, not ours. Liz Currie Toronto (CP) -- The mayor of a Toronto suburb wants the city's garbage wrapped in plastic and shipped to Northern Ontario, rather than having it dumped at a proposed new landfill site north of the Toronto Zoo. *There is just no more room to dump garbage in the Metro area," Scarborough mayor Gus Harris said about Toronto's garbage crisis. Harris said he would like to see the garbage compacted, encased in plastic and shipped by rail to Northern Ontario, where it could be stored in abandoned mine shafts. Harris strongly opposes a plan recommended by a Toronto works department officials that would establish an interim garbage dump on about 40 hectares of vacant farmland owned by the province in north- east Scarborough. Toronto landfill sties are full to the brim and officials have been eyeing vacant land outside of the city for possible garbage dumps. Some Northern Ontario municipalities might be happy to accept Toronto's garbage if it was safely encased in plastic Harris » said. When Dennis Flynn, chairman of Metropolitan Toronto, made a similar suggestion in January . mayors of Kirkland Lake, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, Cobalt and Elliott Lake said their communi- ties did not want Toronto's garbage. Minister says funding provided for. Eye Care Van has been The following is an edited copy of a letter sent to Gilles Pouliot, M.P.P. Lake Nipigon, discussing the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Health regarding regional eye care services. Dear Gilles: Eye services to residents of Northern Ontario are supported by this Ministry through four major initiatives. Incentive grants are pro- vided to specialists to establish practice in northern centres, and travelling specialties are supported to travel from northern or southern Ontario into the smaller northern towns. In addition, the Northern travel grant provides support to allow northern Ontario residents to visit eye specialists in both northern and southern Ontario. The C.N.I.B. Mobile Eye Care Van attempts to visit, between May and October each year, many of the smaller northern communities that are not large enough to justify reg- ular visits from travelling special- Many small and isolated com- munities in the North rely on this type of service. It is important that all four methods of providing ser- vices are kept in mind when one is assessing the amount of resources to be devouted to any one of the components. Financial support has been pro- vided to the Mobile Eye Care Van by the Ministry of Health through the Underserviced Area Program since 1979. The objective of this funding is to subsidize the opera- tion of the eye van on the road when it visits the rural and remote communities. In addition, the Ministry pays honoraria and travel expenses for ophthalmologists serving on the eye van and OHIP fees for patients seen by them. The additional Ministry costs for the services provided through the Eye Van amount to several hun- dred thousand dollars each year. In 1987, Mr. Dennis Tottenham, Northwest Regional Director, C.N.LB., wrote to the then Minister of Health, The Honourable Murray "'senerous"' it was agreed to increase the amount of support from the Underserviced Area Program by about 30 per cent, from $59,213 for 1987-88 to $78,104 for 1988-89. I believe that the question of funding the operation of the van _has already been given a fair and thorough review, with a generous increase in the level of funding. I do hope that the administrative problems the C.N.I.B is apparently encountering will not jeopardize the operation of the Mobile Eye Care Unit, since the van enables a valuable service to be provided to residents in about 35 isolated towns in Northern Ontario.
