Over 30,000 hunters bag MNR validation tags The Ministry of Natural Resources has mailed 31,694 cow and bull validation tags to hunters for the 1988 moose hunt. The annual draw for moose val- idation tags was held June 30, and all of the 80,886 hunters who put their names on the 1988 draw will be notified by the end of. July whether or not they receive tags. The draw is part of the min- istry's Moose Selective Harvest Program, which was initiated in 1983 to allow the moose popula- tion to rebuild. The random draw for tags in 68 Wildlife Management Units with moose seasons in Ontario ensures a fair allocation of moose hunting opportunities. During the second and third weeks of August, hunters who applied but were not successful in this year's draw will be given a chance to obtain one of the 4,017 surplus tags. This will bring the total of 1988 tags to 35,711.
